Louisiana sinkhole udpate

And even with this emerging situation still developing, the worries are clear: Why did Assumption Parish start to shake in July, why did the Bayou bubble, and why is there an enormous sinkhole quickly expanding? The million dollar question--and most imperative to answer as quickly as possible--is this: Is there a methane bubble ready to burst?

Keep in tune with Horror Report.. this site is watching the situation closely and following a few folks in the area who are constantly updating..

COMPLIANCE reviews coming in: Some walking out of theaters, others observing the societal themes apparent in the film

A very interesting article from SLATE about the film COMPLIANCE. Aisha Harris describes events taking place in a screening for Craig Zobel's film.. According to the SLATE report, it was about a half hour in when audience members began to audibly sigh out and yell things during the film, with one person even walking out of the film..

However, the overriding question of 'how stupid can you be' is interesting. A review from the website BEST MOVIE REVIEWS EVER says that when an audience walks out angry, a director did his job.

Matt Patches writes:
The next few months have a lot of potential gems in store for horror buffs, with the wild ghost tale The Possession right around the corner, the haunted house pic Sinister and a fourth Paranormal Activityscheduled for October. But Compliance is a true taste of horror outside-the-box, where that abandoned cabin closet is a real life person, and the terrifying mystery behind what lies behind the door is pure human emotion.
I haven’t mentioned everything that happens in Compliance. but it’s a tough sit. I suspect you’ve already decided if you want to subject yourself to the movie, as you would to a haunted house ride that takes place inside your skull. If this riveting, repelling film is to be seen, it must be not at home but in a theater, where you are confined in a room, like Sandra and Becky, deciding whether to watch, and how you would react.
But the real question concerning the success of a movie like COMPLIANCE is this: Do people want to get taught a moral lesson? or just go to a movie?

The Sandusky case is fresh on the mind of the collective audience--and people know what happened in that situation when authority went unquestioned for decades.

And this film, one which seemingly lacks blood and gore, may be refreshing. It an account of how horrific people, deep inside their dark hearts, can often be. And how we, sadly, rarely question authority and just 'go with  the flow' even if that flows takes us down to the depths of earthly depravity.

Lots of people, including me, are beginning to think that Shia LeBeouf is getting really weird

He was naked for a music video a bit of time ago. People who saw it won't forget it for reasons unknown or known. Now news of this oddity comes at us from various sources, including the the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: LeBeouf's next role in film will be a nymphomaniac in a Lars Von Trier film--but the shock is this, he will be having 'real sex.'

And just when you thought no one cared about LeBeouf's strange behavior, enter this: His girlfriend was photographed by paparazzi having a tearful exchange with Shia in Los Angeles. It was later denied that the argument centered on Shia's approach to the movie including his plans to actually have sex during the filming.

Though I enjoy movies and this site often focuses on film, I am not inclined to care much about the gossip angle of Hollywood life. However, I felt the sudden strangeness of Shia LeBeouf needed to be presented. The guy is getting odd. I feel like a gawker looking at photos of him arguing with his girlfriend, as it's not my business. But when he shows himself naked and wants to assault us with reality sex scenes in an upcoming film, then it becomes out business.

A worsening scene: 44 states see unemployment increases

The economy is feeble at best, but these new numbers help put huge doubts in claims that the recovery is continuous. According to new numbers issued by the government, unemployment has increased in 44 states in the last month.. MORE HERE

Some say that the increases are a sign of an 'improving' economy and more people 'searching for jobs.'

Others however see the obvious: Since 2007  the economy began a decline which became more steep in 2008 and 2009. Since that point, real jobless numbers have been much above the amount accounted for by official government numbers--probably 20% or above. Youth unemployment has drastically decreased.  And finally, the human toll has been enormous. People are losing mental abilities as they suffer the decline of their own livelihood, college kids cannot find jobs in their majors, and we are creating a lost generation that is not able to afford their own homes. The giant sucking sound that began in 1993 with NAFTA is finally ending...but the sound has changed: Now instead of sucking, it's contracting, and what is going away is the once vibrant American middle class.

That is the true picture of the economy.
And the fact unemployment has increased in 44 states of 50 won't surprise people, but it may shock the ones in the six states where employment increased since they are still affected by the same national quandary we all find ourselves in.

A worm beats Monsanto.. but will the jeans strike back in the future?

While Monsanto and others rush money into California to beat Proposition 37, the GMO labeling initiative, another story about the genetically modified crop producer is is raising doubts on just how big resistant the crops produced may be.

An Illinois researcher has now confirmed that that there is a rootworm resistance to Monsanto corn trait.. This may be a matter  of the earth striking back. The Illinois research seems to help in the conclusion superbugs are being created by GMO crops!

What does that mean for the future? It could be an a lot. Imagine a work where crops fail despite the time and effort--and chemicals--being pumped into them. All because of us, and decades of GMO crops forcing bugs and insects to evolve into super-resistant creatures that cannot be beaten no matter how strong a chemical it is?

And perhaps one where those same bugs strike your body too: Monsanto is now taking on cotton, and maybe genetically modified clothing will be next.

Another week of Premiere Radio ignoring Art Bell's request

Several weeks ago, Art Bell posted (deliberately, unless the accidental liver cancer quip) a message on his Facebook page that he sent a letter to Premiere asking them to cease broadcasting the Somewhere in Time radio shows on Saturday nights. While fans of Bell were confused and somewhat angry, as this is their only venue to hear his voice anymore on radio, most sided with him. The overall consensus is that George Noory took Coast to Coast AM into such a direction that Bell didn't want to be associated with the program anymore.

However, Premiere has yet to respond in any public manner, as does Bell since the initial request was made slightly public.

But tonight, yet again, Premiere will air Somewhere in Time with Art Bell--this one traveling back to August 18, 1999, with Richard C. Hoagland as the guest..

Additionally George Noory still signs off each night's program with Art Bell's name.

Time will tell what action may come next from Bell..

New numbers showcase just how worried Monsanto is about GMO labeling in California

A big initiative is on the ballot in California--if it passes it could have major repercussions across the United States.

Proposition 37 would require any genetically modified food that is sold to be labeled GMO so consumers know what they are eating. Frankenfood supporters have lined up in a solidified approach: Records now published showcase just how much money is being thrown to defeating this initiative.

According to the California Right to Know Campaign publication in the Sacramento BEE, Monsanto has given $4.2 million to defeat Prop 37. It's not just them, other influential names with big dollars are throwing cash at ensuring loss of Prop 37 as well, including Dupont, Pepsi, Nestle, Coke, and Ocean Spray. All the big players. Chances are you either had a Pepsi or Coke in the past week.. wonder why they don't want the masses, those asses, to know what GMO is in their carbonated sludge?

A costly campaign.. Interesting.

But polling on the campaign is just as interesting as the big money from big corporations being thrown at it. According to recent numbers, the pro-labeling side has a 3 to 1 advantage over keeping GMO secret. Obviously that is a reason for the huge influx of cash over the past few weeks. Other confusion and misleading advertising seems to be existent on both sides of the debate, with pro-labeling forces arguing that there will be no increase in the cost of a product.

And if the money is THIS BIG in the summer, imagine the high stakes game of poker that will be played come October.

The November elections are going to be exciting for political observers. But food fans will closely watch the Proposition Frankenfood 37 vote: Will big agri win or will the modified foods be labeled? Only weeks until we find out.

Whitley Strieber steps in!! Art Bell is 'fine'

From Strieber's Facebook page moments ago..

Perhaps next time Art Bell will think twice about the power of the great net rumor..

Art Bell does NOT HAVE LIVER CANCER, his father-in-law does.

All much ado about nothing in the end.
Art Bell apparently thought he made 'it clear on his page' that his father-in-law was dying of cancer but hundreds of people didn't get that impression. It was not clear. The belief after the message was posted was that Art Bell was dying of liver cancer..

While it's sad that his wife's father is the person afflicted with the disease, it's clear that there may have been a misunderstanding about how quick rumors can fly and perhaps a misconception about how Facebook posting work. That or Airyn posted the message not realizing the implications: A night of rumors that a talk show legend is perishing, a posting from Whitley that Art is fine.. and nothing more from Art Bell on his own page.

Facebook is magical and devious all at the same time. We see great examples of that tonight.

Confusion over Art Bell's Facebook message

Did Art Bell mean himself when he said liver cancer? Or did he mean his father-in-law? The Internet is alive and well with argument and debate over what exactly Art Bell meant with his odd Facebook post tonight. Could have been hacked? Trolls? Waiting to find out.

Art Bell liver cancer?!

The Internet is alive with rumors that Art Bell posted on his Facebook page: 'liver cancer 3 to 6 months to live.'

The rumors are true, indeed. Art Bell did in fact post on his Facebook page tonight those exact words..

What does this mean? Does Art himself have liver cancer? Is this about him? We can only assume it is.. Until he clarifies..

Already his comment on Facebook has garnered a huge response, message boards are filled with noise and clatter about what he said on his Facebook page..

The hopes and prayers from this website are with Mr. Bell. I certainly hope what we have seen tonight is not true, a legend of radio suffering from a disease that doctor say will kill him? Waiting to see what happens with this story. Stay tuned..

Here they go again

A year ago Accuweather predicted a snowy and stormy winter for the United States. While some places did in fact see some treacherous weather, it became known as the year without a winter. Warmth caused Cherry Blossoms to bloom early.. no snow caused spring and summer droughts to worsen.. the East Coast saw nearly no snow. And then came summer.

Accuweather is making its prediction again: Another snowy winter is coming again, the weather forecasting company says..

Analysts are already raising eyebrows on such an early winter forecast.

Here is how Accuweather itself writes the forecast
"The I-95 cities could get hit pretty good. It's a matter of getting the cold to phase in with the huge systems that we are going to see coming out of the southern branch of the jet stream this year," AccuWeather.com Lead Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok said.
The cold is expected to phase with the big storms during January and February with the potential for large snowstorms to make headlines and create travel headaches in the major cities.
We will see how true or false...snow lovers hope. Snow haters hope not. Will it be the year without a winter again? It certainly was not the year without a summer...

Sailor claims he snapped a photo of the Loch Ness Monster!

It has been rumored for decades that Nessie resides deep in a lake in Scotland. And now, he said he has the picture to prove it!!

According to George Edwards, a sailor who has a boat named "Nessie hunter," he takes a voyage daily to search for Nessie.. He said he saw something out of the corner of his eye, and SNAP! here is Nessie..

ABC news has more on Edwards' tale, whether it be tall or small. Nessie alive? And well? After all these years. Good to see the hump-backed something still swimming happily along, somewhere out there..

Perhaps she is reproducing.

Spawning more Nessies for generations to come to get a picture of.
Elusive and seclusive. But every now and then she bursts to the surface to be in the scene. She is a star waiting to be born! Hollywood here she comes!

Welcome to the new and improved Horror Report

If you are a regular reader here on the Horror Report, you may have noticed some not so subtle changes that took place overnight.

Since the beginning of the Horror Report, back when the site had a dash in the middle in the year 2001, it was updated purely in HTML language. It was FTPed and uploaded for the world to see. Today, we have switched over to a more user friendly blog style format with date stamped posts. Readers will also be able to, if they so choose, comment on postings and links.

I will attempt to ensure that the design, look, and feel of the Horror Report stay the same. While I have been criticized over the years for an ugly black background and terrible red lettering, it's true to form. It's how we began, and it's how I want to stay.

The two best benefits to the new style are these: I can integrate posts onto the Horror Report Twitter feed, and the site now has a user friendly mobile app for readers to get news on the go. I believe the future is mobile, and I hope that this new format allows users to have an easier time finding news on their phones and mobile devices.

The news on here exists because it was uploaded from a sister website I was updating for a few months to get practice at this, Earthinformer.com. All of the news that appears on here was once on there--so don't be confused when you see "earthinformer" in text. It was me. The old archive still exists of the Horror Report, too.

Please stay tuned to this site for more changes, more additional ways to stay up to date with scary news of fiction and non fiction. It honors me to know that you come here to see this little corner of the web.. My hope is never to scare you but educate you about some truly strange, confounding, creepy, and downright scary things taking place on this pale blue dot known as earth--and beyond.

Stay true.
Don't be scared.
Sincerely,
Bryan Smolock, Editor, HORRORREPORT.COM

Clerical error causes internet furor.. no, weather forecasters are not buying ammunition.

Many websites, including Horror Report, reported earlier today that the National Weather Service was buying ammunition. The story grew even larger after Alex Jones' Infowars website was linked by the Drudge Report. However it was all due to a clerical error, according to the NWS. The ammo is meant for NMFS instead. That is the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Not to complicate an already confusing story, but what exactly will the NMFS do with all that ammo? Not sure on that, but we are sure that the NWS issued this statement today around 1pm:
Due to a clerical error in the federal business vendor process, a solicitation for ammunition and targets for the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement mistakenly identified NOAA’s National Weather Service as the requesting office. The error is being fixed and will soon appear correctly in the electronic federal bidding system. The ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies and it will be used by 63 NOAA enforcement agents in their twice annual target qualifications and training.

Mutant butterflies after Fukushima.. it's not a movie, it's real life

Last year's double whammy of quake and tsunami created a nuclear catastrophe that generations will experience. Whether it's the rainwater we collect, the air we breathe, or the fish we eat, there are going to be ramifications to the meltdown at Fukushima in 2011.

Scientists said today that genetic mutations have been found in three generations of butterflies that originate near Fukushima. The frightening part is this, according to the research facts they released: 12% of pale grass blue butterflies had abnormalities, during the second generation is 18%.. during the third generation it dramatically increased to 34%--an obvious upswing showing that later generations are increasingly in effects from what occurred in Japan.

If you read comments on the story you will observe there are countless amounts of flippant jokes and sarcastic quips about butterflies, Godzilla, and other immature chuckles. But what is true is this: There are serious consequences for this planet any time something nuclear occurs. The fact that governments tried to hide seriousness last year of what happened at Fukushima is the most telling example that what happened at Fukushima should be carefully studied and monitored. We are what we eat.. we stand in the rain without umbrellas.. we hope our water is clean. And we fondly look at beautiful butterflies as they meander from plant to planet. Maybe everything is illuminated because perhaps everything is radiated.
