Mexico volcano spews: Popocatepetl active

Volcano Popocatepetl, only 50 miles from Mexico City, spewed ash and rock overnight Friday. Villagers nearly looked at the volcano in fear as the plumes rose from the massive mountain. One ash cloud shot over 2 miles into the air. 

One village six miles from the volcano had rumbling so strong that it sent people into the streets in the darkness, running after feeling tremors.

A Reuters dispatch accounts for how exactly nearby residents will be warned to leave: 

"They told us that we need to be ready because if we have to evacuate, they are going to warn us with the church bells," said Lizbeth Agustin, a 22-year-old candy vendor who had collected half a pail of ash in the town center of Santiago Xalitzintla.

So that's the plan.

When those church bells ring, just don't run for the nearest church. Run like HELL the other way.

Trying desperately to keep print alive, TIME? …

Perhaps the goal is to get teenage boys to read about the news.

I actually subscribed happily to TIME magazine in the 1990s when I was a teenage boy. To be honest, I loved the news then as much as I do now. But TIME has changed. The times have changed, too.

Time Magazine is much less a news magazine of record. It's more a record of pop culture and tech gadgets. 

The issue of breast feeding, in itself, is interesting. Don't get me wrong. And I surely don't subscribe to the idea that it's perverted in any shape.. But it seems that TIME has subscribed to that. Too bad few subscribe to TIME anymore. But in all seriousness, it would appear that the magazine's attempt to sexualize breast feeding (And make it creepy with an older kid receiving mom's milk from the teet) is a gross display of how truly desperate to sell issues it is. 

Print is desperate to stop the internet from killing it. But few told print that it is already dead. This week's TIME shows it is just having one last out of body experience before entering the light..

There is always something about news accounts of animals beaching themselves or thousands of dead birds being found in a single week that freak me out a bit. 

Animals many times are harbingers.. They are sometimes more clued in to earth and how things work than humans.

We can learn a thing or two perhaps if we stopped and thought about these profound numbers of dead birds along Chilean beaches. If we care.

Victory day celebrations in Russia now marred by the violence taking place in Moscow, where over 200 arrests were made, according to Russian police.

Protesters covered themselves from the rain. Police stormed in.. The "Moscow Times" tells us that the vast majority of people who were arrested were done so 'without the use of force.'

A recent New York Times story detailed "overflowing violence" in Moscow.

Sitting presidents rarely have any substantial problems getting their party's nomination. Likewise, there are seldom primary opponents. Unless an inmate is able to get his name on the ballot by paying, and he gets 40% of the vote in West Virginia.

Perhaps the "anything but the incumbent" idea paid off.

His name is Keith Judd, an inmate from Texas, serving time for making threats in 1999.  He got onto West Virginia's ballot by paying $2,500 and filing a notarized form.

He received 40% of Democratic primary voters. The sitting President, Barack Obama,, received 60%.

Pretty rough numbers for a sitting president. And rougher, considering the amount of worldwide headlines showcasing those numbers ...

EARTHLINGS LOOK TO THE SKY: MASSIVE SUNSPOT DEVELOPING

A massive sunspot has developed on the sun.. One that, if a flare would hurl from our star, could have massive ramifications for the planet Earth.

According to latest observations of the monster spot on the sun, AR 1476, it has a diameter of 60,000 miles--earth is just under 8,000 miles across. 

NASA itself dubbed 1476 a "monster" in a Twitter announcement about the sunspot. The term caught on quickly.. news organizations picked up the term and are using it constantly.

SpaceWeather.com reports that the sunspot is so large and intense that backyard telescopes are easily able to get a glimpse of it. 

Geomagnetic storms have hit earth in the past with severe consequences. A century ago, telegraph machines were hit during one famous solar storm. In 1989, Quebec saw disruptions from the effects of a flare. And in our modern day world of just in time and less hands on and more keys on, a more frightening scenario could develop. The reliance on modern day technology is a blessing when all is well but a detriment if something goes awry.. and staring at AR 1476, you can easily ponder the possibilities of something going quite awry indeed.
