A little personal story about why I sometimes fear Saturday nights

Just another Saturday night in parenting land.
It’s funny, my wife and I always have a tiny sense of dread about Saturday nights. It’s because whenever in the 20-month-history of our son Ayden’s life, he has been sick, teething, went to emergency rooms, or broke legs right before the weekend. And this weekend, yet again, is no different.
He’s running a low grade fever all day. Drinking lots of fluid, he was eating pretty well, and he was watching Caillou all day—listen, ALL DAY! ALL DAY!!! It’s his comfort so mom and dad let it happen. And now, he just fell asleep yet again with a fever running up.
Motrin/Tylenol and all that stuff is ready for the night. I may turn in early in case he wakes up… then I’ll play Caillou yet again and listen to John B Wells on Coast to Coast AM in one ear. I think he’s talking about destruction coming with planet Nibiru. So while I comfort my son I’ll be scared to death at conspiracy madness 2012. Can’t wait.
Just hope the fever goes away. It may be a long night. But hopefully a long night of sleep. As parents out there may know though, it could also be a long night of AM cries and highs .. Wish us all luck here in the mountains of the coal region….

Chaos on the field after baseball umps make bad call; Fans litter field

Mix a controversial call with really angry baseball fans and you'll get this: A mess of a stadium, debris and garbage flying through the air onto the field, and nervous players hoping not to be hit with beer cans.

What a way to shine, Atlanta. More from CNN and more from ESPN..

The theory you are not real...

There has been a popular thought lately among folks with astute degrees and high intelligence: The theory that we are not real, that life is just a projection, that humans and the race we have lived and are living is just a big quantum experiment. Or as Nancy Evans Bush said on Coast to Coast AM last week, we are a joke..

The newest example of this thought process comes from the NEW SCIENTIST, which places on its cover and talks in great detail in its issue, about what exactly reality is. The publication is also devoting a special section to that question on their website as well..  And it's a great question. Think of the implication, the deep rooted potential, and the mighty ability to chaos that comes with the answer...

To me, reality is my own. I know my reality, I know my family, friends.. I know my job.. I know my hobbies, my fears, and my hopes. I don't really know yours. And you don't know mine. So reality, in a sense, is specific to the person having that reality. Do we share one ultimate reality? Maybe. Although atheists may say no, as will Christians, as will Muslims, and as will Mormons--along with any other religion, sect, tribe, or tribulation. Reality will be specific to them. And to someone who hallucinates on regular basis, well, it's safe to assume few will ever be able to get a grip on their reality.

But what if we are nothing? What if we are a bit of bytes and coding in some quantum computer, somewhere out there..? Somewhere here? What if we are fake. Just projections. Just manifestations of software permitted to just 'run with it'?  It may be difficult to imagine, but some are imagining just that: The very real potential reality as we know it is just a computer simulation.

This bizarre idea arose from an argument over black holes. One of the fundamental tenets of physics is that information cannot be destroyed, but a black hole appears to violate this by swallowing things that contain information then gradually evaporating away. What happens to that information was the subject of a long debate between Stephen Hawking and several of his peers. In the end, Hawking lost the debate, conceding that the information is imprinted on the event horizon that defines the black hole’s boundary and escapes as the black hole evaporates.
This led theoretical physicists Leonard Susskind and Gerard’t Hooft to propose that the entire universe could also hold information at its boundary — with the consequence that our reality could be the projection of that information into the space within the boundary.
There are huge implications if you go down this road. If you strip humans of the flesh and bones we think we have, take away those memories and chalk them up to simulated experiences, and just say it's all not real but a figment of some programmer, well.. that is massive. Are we just mindless bits and bytes living out some creepy SIM CITY type of game? How does the game end? Who started the game? ...and if someone did truly start it, could consider that being or beings to be "God" ??

What role would free will play in a simulation? Would our SIMS and avatars be permitted to even possess such a gift?

And finally, if we are just flowing through some binary processor, what can one make of love and hate? What can you say about tears?

Think of it this way: If tomorrow irrefutable evidence turned up that we truly were not real but instead a part of a quantum program, many people on this planet (which would not really be a planet in reality) would cry. They would have real wet watery tears flowing. Or would they? Permits the programmer would allow those tears to flow. And if he clicked to stop them... we'd just vanish with the program.

For those who believe that we are in this world of fraud, I certainly hope the programmer or the god doesn't accidentally walk by his desk and unplug the computer by accident.

Finally, I say this: We make fake world, we grow fake plants in Farmville (does anyone play that still?) and we have pretend avatars. What if those avatars come alive, have feelings, and think they are real too. We suddenly become God. To them. But who would be God to us? The one who made us..whether it's flesh and bones or endless 0s and 1s of data.

Fascinating questions. Profound answers.
But none to be found!

Those creepy crisp October nights, as things turn a whiter shade of pale

Something special exists in the deep dark nights of October. Maybe it's that tingle of terror in the air, or the creepy crisp cold that begins to develop as the months moves on in time.. Perhaps it's the fields of screaming that terrify people who want a good scare, somewhere in corn fields and farms across America. Haunted attractions are plentiful..

October can be so bittersweet as you see time roll on. Dropping temperatures can even be a cruel punishment for a beautiful September.

October can be a painful reminder of something we all will face: Annihilation. As leaves die they turn vibrant.. much as people do.. As grass turns yellow and the skies begin to dampen into a hazy shade of gray, the sun angles itself somewhere else and the season changes .. autumn is here. Winter is our lives is creeping in.

October can be painful. It can have prizes. It can also force a heart starving for love and beauty to weep at the bleak landscape that a month of leaves changing results in.

We are here again, then. This month of October will give us beauty. And a biting sense that impending doom and gloom can occur at the drop of a dime.

Good evening to all.
Happy October from the HORROR REPORT.

Customers at a Kentucky Chinese restaurant called the Red Flower were presumably eating and enjoying their dinner when they caught a glimpse of something horrific: Roadkill being wheeled into the kitchen!

CBS in Williamsburg, KY, reports that people saw a deer stuffed in a trash can being wheeled into the kitchen. Even worse, a trail of blood followed the trash can, the blood was being mopped up by workers ..

The place is shut down, obviously. Temporarily. TEMPORARILY ?  Ugh...

Should winter storms be named?

I have been a long proponent of winter storms being named. They deserve it. The blizzard of 93 would sound much more frightening if it was named El Diablo, after all.
There may have been divine intervention now as the Weather Channel has decided this year to NAME WINTER STORMS!  So they are only as official as the Weather Channel. Not the NOAA. Not Accuweather. Just the Weather Channel. And that's fine. I bet it catches on. It take son to start the ball rolling.
But here is the problem.. And the Weather Channel answers none of these issues: Is there a difference between West Coast and East Coast, Midwest and South storms? What if the storm turns out to be a dud..? Will the storm be named AFTER it strikes or before? We all know computer models show storms in the winter time that never become a storm.. So what then? cancel the name and start from scratch?
What about the possibility that nationwide there are more than 26 storms?
What constitutes a named storm? Wind? snow potential or actuality?
The Weather Channel, narrated by Al Roker, explains why it will be naming storms.  I can't help but thinking the channel is trying to get some attention and press before tomorrow's 2012-13 Accuweather winter forecast is released..
So my final question, since I am near some areas that get those lake effect snows, is this: What about the snow squalls that dump 20+ inches? Shall we name squalls?
And are cold fronts next?
I have long hoped for a naming of storms. But now when I think about the logistics, I ponder how in the world this naming process will go......

From HALLOWEEN to FRIDAY THE 13THs to SAW to .. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. This is the newest horror saga on tight budgets..

Last night on Coast to Coast AM, George Knapp interviewed someone named Nancy Evans Bush. Bush had a near death experience--but not the typical. The NDEs of popular culture speak about bright lights, big cities, lots of family, and happy thoughts. Also in the mix often are heavenly visits of Jesus minus the crown of thorns. And every now and then a few fields of beauty are involved.

For Nancy Evans Bush, none of the above. As a  matter of fact, her near death experience will make you question just about everything you know. She saw entities and those entities told her that her life meant nothing, and that the fact she had a child was a joke. Not sure who laughed, but her description of events sits unwell with the heart. Even more, as she described on last night's late night radio scare, lots of others have had some of the same experiences. Bush even went on to mention Howard Storm's brush with Satan and his visit to hell, or so he says, after he died and went there in the 20th century...

Bush's slow-spoken style made you feel like you were listening to your God-fearing grandmother. If you reall listened to what she had to say, it made you question most things. And a brief look into Bush's past makes your eyebrows even raise higher. Think of this: She was twice (not thrice but twice) born again by Billy Graham! Even more, she was  God fearing soul who thought she was on the right path to salvation. And when she had this near death voyage into the something-world, she met up with circular characters who told her is is all meaningless.. All of it. The nasty spirits went on to tell her that her life meant absolutely nothing and was not even worth a laugh line on a terrible sitcom.

Last night's Coast to Coast AM was worthy of a warm firepit on a cold night. Crack open a cold beer and listen to the airwaves.. and wonder if this, "this", is all there is. What if life is a joke! What if the entities are laughing at our toils and troubles. What if Dante's Inferno just burns for no one to feel? Some weighty questions.

Think about this fact: You are reading this and waiting to die. Waiting to perish from this planet. For each fleeting moment, the eventual grows closer. For every laugh you have and tear your shed, your last breath is coming.. for every second of life where you think you're invincible, the moment when you find out that invincibility ends is on the way.

Nancy Evans Bush was not pushing religion last night when she appeared. She wasn't even pushing an anti-religion thought. Instead it appeared she was speaking from the heart about something we're all going to have to face one day on the way. We will all expire from Earth. We will all say goodbye. Some sooner than others. When we do, we will face whatever entity or entities or future that all others have before us.

Christians say God will save.
Atheists claim it won't matter if we behave.
And Nancy Evans Bush says some out there in the next world will tell us nothing really matters.

What makes last night's Coast to Coast AM frightening is that we all have the same common voyage to make; after all we will all die, and that very fact binds us together..

We see war and pestilence, sickness and crime. And Nancy Bush makes you wonder about time.

Science will never answer these questions of the basic meaning of life. And maybe they shouldn't. After all science is theory.. and not even science came come to grips with the eventual.

Perhaps October is just the month when the border between the here and the there breaks down. Maybe we come closer to ghosts during the season of the witch. Maybe Nancy Evans Bush is just nuts. A crazy old crackpotted lady who is talking about nonsense on late night paranormal radio. Or maybe not.

Either way, we will all find out. We will all succumb to something that takes our breath away for good. And what happens after? Either the atheist is right and nothing takes place or there is something else. And that something else could be ... well, anything else.

MONDAY OCTOBER 1 2012, NEWS OF THE WORLD

A massive harvest moon was shining bright last night as the calender turned pages. The month of September was short this year. It felt very brief. And now here we are in October. The ecclectic mix of cold and heat is common. Sometimes even snow in October briefly visits. Strange times are here.. Some say it's when the vale between the here and now and the ..not so here and now breaks down. So let it. For it's that magical time of year when ghosts, goblins, and spirits fill the night. October: Bring it on.

Large earthquakes linked to larger global aftershocks..

The sinkhole in Assumption Parish is growing..

US quietly moving fleet to disputed waters between Japan and China..

Just in time for October: "Zombie economy"..

Perhaps he finally heard his own music: Justin Bieber vomits on stage..

George Michael cancels tour due to 'major anxiety'..

Confirmations for AMAZING SPIDERMAN sequel (yes a sequel)

HARRY POTTER to potty mouth: JK Rowling slammed for 'losing her magic' with new adult book..

Halloween pop culture: Gangnam Style now recognized..

Do Halloween mask purchases predict the president?

Speaking of presidential masks, this year's Obama and Romney false faces are some of the worst ever made. I am surprised with how much they do not capture the two and hardly look at all like both men..

THIS IS THE WAR THAT NEVER ENDS

It seems to go on and on..

After 11 years of war in Afghanistan, a new milestone has been hit: 2,000 United States soldiers have died during the conflict.

There are few people at home now that pay any attention to what our troops are doing in that  nation. There aren't major bold headlines stating that 2,000 are dead as occurred in 2005 when the Iraq war deaths topped that tragic number.

The death tolls has been climbing in recent months in Afghanistan as more attacks take place on US troops. More police turning on those who trained them.. and much more resistance is taking place in some strongholds across the country..

Another untold story is the troops that don't fall in the fields of battle: There have been countless other stories of troops losing legs and arms, having mental and physical ailments.. and being scarred by a war in a faraway land that Americans stopped paying attention to.

And why did we stop paying attention to Afghanistan? It was a major issue in 2008 when President Obama made that his war to defend during the campaign. Obama said he wanted to win there. And now four years later we are talking about withdrawing major combat forces by 2014, but few are speaking about the current events in the nation.

It's another election year. During the Republican campaign, candidate Mitt Romney failed to mention the war in Afghanistan. Democrats saluted troops but surely didn't want to speak of the theater they are currently fighting in. It is hear no evil see no evil time in this country.. as our brave men and women still fight and often die in Kabul and caves surrounding it, we are greeted by headlines of stupidity. Kate Middleton's breast dangling and Honey Boo Boo's parents wrangling for money. The true valor and courage that is taking place among our military? Unspeakable since we talk nothing of it. The deaths taking place? the injuries? Speak no evil!

No headlines. No demands for answers on strategy. Nothing of the sort.
Not even yellow ribbons tied on trees.
Most of the flags are quite weathered and withering these days..

Somewhere in Time.. feels like so long ago now

Last night I listened a bit to Art Bell's 'Somewhere in Time.' Thankfully Mr. Bell has not yet been successful in getting Premiere Radio to stop broadcasting the past shows. Because when he finally does win, that will mean listeners will be stuck with right wing propaganda and .. the intelligence of George Noory.

Last  night the past came back with Howard Rheinhold being interviewed about how the Internet would change everyone's life. They talked about 'smart phones' without calling them that, but instead they commented in amazement how you can get the Internet by just having a wireless card in an airport.

So I thought back for a second in time. 2002. Where was I. What was I. I was a 22 year old kid who was, at that time, pretty addicted to the Internet. I had my own website by the time I was 18 years old.. the more I came to know how the net worked the better I liked it. I used email (really don't much anymore besides for work) and I also had a large gigantic cancer-causing AT&T phone. You know, one of those that would make someone ask if you're happy to see them. This was me in 2002.

So when I heard Art Bell and Rheinhold almost speak in bewilderment about how the future was coming fast, it seems like eons ago. It was just about 10 years ago.

10 years in net time is light years..

Who would have thought in 2002 that people in China who mass produce iPhones would be trying to commit suicide so much that protective nets would have to be placed around the factory. And at that same factory riots take place and robots zoom around to check people for moods? Meanwhile the world eats up iPhones, forgetting the sweat, tears, and often BLOOD, that goes into producing them. We've heard of blood diamonds. Now we have blood dials.  I have one, too. There are times, though, I feel guilty as I search the net while in some obscure location. I'd be much happier if the factory conditions of where my phone was made would be just a little more ...humane.

It's fun to go back in time with Art Bell in general, but last night's show was particularly addictive.

Maybe I'm just getting old way too fast but I don't think 2002 seems like that long ago. Until you think about it.

And realize.. wow, that was 10 years ago already. Bush was president, we were only in one war, and people didn't have Facebook accounts.

By God, they didn't even have Myspace pages, either. Angelfire and Geocities were king. Goodbye past.

Dallas Texas suburb hit by minor earthquake

The stars are night are deep and bright, and so was a 3.4 magnitude earthquake that struck a Dallas Texas suburb, rattling nerves and knocking pictures off of walls. No major heartache or breakage, the airport kept on going, and despite the chance of aftershocks, life is going on as normal. As normal as you can get after your area gets an earthquake, even though it rarely does. The USGS said the quake hit at 11:05 CDT time Saturday .. 911 was flooded with calls, and a subsequent 3.1 aftershock occurred in proximity to the stronger shake..

This is yet another example of how the earth is changing, in some manner, and places that were once safe zones for certain things aren't anymore. Of course someone can say 'go back in history' and see all of the other times instances like this occurred in Texas--which they have--and prove me wrong. But perhaps the better thing to say would be during my lifetime, and maybe yours too, things like this are just plain out weird. Next thing you know there will be an East Coast earthquake that rattles the entire North American plate. Oh wait, that happened in August 2011. Strike that.

Did FOX News inadvertently get what it wanted?

I feel a bit bad for Shepard Smith of FOX NEWS this week. The network was covering a high speed car chase--as it so often does during slow news days--when the driver of the car drove down a dirt stretch, got out, and proceeded to commit suicide on live TV for all to see. Smith tried to get the station to stop airing before the shot to the head occurred, but was too late: Anyone paying attention saw a man take his own life on the news.. (MORE HERE)

The entire situation is pretty tragic. And quite surprising. I thought a 5 second delay was the normal course of business when covering life events. In this instance there was quite a FOX NEWS FAIL.

Or was it success?
Think about it..
In covering live car chases on television, what is a network expecting will happen? What are executives behind the camera hoping for? They want excitement! Drama! They want cars to zoom through residential neighborhood, being chased by police! They want high speed chases on expressways! Anything that can get someone to focus for an extended period of time on these events.

The fact that these car chases are so often covered by FOX makes me wonder if this new event that happened will cause someone to pause. Maybe more thought will go into the notion of just picking up local affiliate feeds of high speed pursuits. Or perhaps they will just utilize the 5 to 10 second delay more often.

Many people are decrying the coverage of the chase and suicide this week. Lots are coming down on FOX for appealing to a frenzied mass of people by even covering them to begin with. But I say, for as tragic and horrific as the situation became, it was a perfect win win for FOX. Those unnamed executives got what they wanted: The ultimate ending. No follow up needed. Suicide on live TV.

Perhaps we are just becoming inhumane in our treatment of fellow humans. That or we just like a good chase. Regardless of how it ends.

Shep Smith: I feel for you. But next time you're told to go to a high speed car chase? Maybe you should just cut to the commercial early...
