1919 was then. 2019 is now. 100 years later and the same fears and human emotions persist

New years 1919.. 100 years back.. The temperature went down to 25 degrees and remained below 31 all day.

Sleet fell sporadically, mixed with rain. A blizzard loomed on the Panhandle and threatened Central Texas..

Also in the war’s aftermath, labor unions began a series of strikes for higher pay and better benefits. Unions had stalled negotiations because of the war; now times were different, but management refused to bargain.

The Santa Fe Railway’s telegraphers went on strike just before New Year’s. Other unions joined in solidarity.

“The fire department was called out twice Tuesday night (New Year’s Eve) to answer false alarms, presumably turned in by New Year’s celebrants,” the Telegram reported.

“The New Year was otherwise ushered in very quietly. At midnight, many guns were fired, but the whistles and bells joined in the noise very weakly.”

Victories in Europe allowed the United States, once considered a backward uncouth nation, to emerge victorious as a 20th century superpower…

That was then.

2019 is now.

BIRDBOX with 45 mil?

NO...
Maybe?

Netflix doesn't give ratings.. but BIRD BOX is so popular it decided to come out of the ratings closet and tell some potentially tall tales...

The streaming service on Friday said more than 45 million "accounts" have watched the Sandra Bullock-led film in its first week of release, the "best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film," the company boasted in a Tweet....
Rebecca Keegan of The Hollywood Reporter questioned the value of Netflix's data in the absence of further context.
"Does Susanne Bier's agent use this data as leverage on her next film? How does a traditional studio considering her for a project view it?" Keegan asked on Twitter.

Bier directed "Bird Box."

Exactly how Netflix qualifies what counts as a viewing is another question. Does the figure account for those who accidentally play the film from an auto-play option? Does it log "viewers" who only watch a few seconds or the entire film?

NETFLIX has taken away their ratings grid.. people cannot bully some shows anymore into non-existence..

And social media--word of mouth that is either true and original or contrived by intelligent brokers of Twitterverse behind the scenes--is better for the streaming service than any ad they could buy.

But 45 million? ...
Bird Box?

Those are some big numbers.
And if true, it proves they know what we are watching.. streaming.. but does it know what you're turning off midway through while you chill?

THE BEST OF TIMES AND THE WORST OF TIMES! PREDICTIONS FOR 2019!

Every year I attempt to give me thoughts about the upcoming year and events that will occur..

But first a breeze back in time. HOW DID I DO!?

FROM 2017, WHAT I SAID WOULD BE THE STORIES OF 2018. My comments afterwards in bold.

  1. Donald Trump is going to have a much more difficult time than expected. At least initially.  He will be besieged by protests and also by people within his own party. By the middle of the year, he will realize that by going directly to people above party leaders can motivate the electorate to accept some if his policies. I expect rallies by the end of the year to be a normal course of White House business.  There were rallies and yes, indeed, a lot of them.. Politics were business as usual as opposed to business as usual. I will give myself credit on this.
  2. The stock market will hit 20,000 and stay within that range. By August we will be speculating when the market will hit 25,000. YES! Right .. .but the market dropped after. I would chalk this up as yet another victory in my predictions.
  3. Vladimir Putin will either visit the United States or Donald Trump will visit Russia. Either way a more united front will emerge. They met. But not the visits I expected. HALF RIGHT.
  4. The weather in 2017 will be hot. As hot as 2016.. there may be slick spots of winter that emerge from time to time sporadically throughout the world, but the majority of the months to come will feature hotter than normal temperatures. Yep. As so it goes... Another point.
  5. The British Royal family will have to decide how to move forward after a tragic scenario.. there may be a new queen before 2018. I will try again next year. No point.
  6. Stephen Colbert may be facing cancellation in 2017. There is going to be a dramatic realignment of late night TV. People are tired of an obsessive amount of politics during the daytime hours. The nighttime should be sacred for comedy. People may turn on political version of such by rebelling against the Colbert program on CBS. Wow how wrong could I be!! Trump helped him. No chance of this ...
  7. BREXIT. Trump. I think France and Germany will have upheaval in 2017. The world is shaking like a post-earthquake atmosphere from the changes in 2016. Transitions something are sloppy. And we have somehow transitioned into something very different than we were in 16.. Yes.. but not being specific, I will not give myself a point.
  8. Major hacking will reveal something in 2017. Either from Wikileaks, or a source not yet to be named. Secrets will become revealed in 2017 to make us question what type of reality we live in. Nope..
  9. Though everyone seems to predict it, Donald Trump will be aggressive in NOT declaring war or bombing other nations. (This is a prediction, but also a prayer) Right.
  10. Virtual reality! All the rage in 2016! …..but just wait. I predict the opposite for 2017. Nope.

And now without further ado some predictions for 2019.......

  1. Economic uncertainly! Will we collapse!? Will we fail?! All of this is on the table as markets go up and down with high momentum.. Big changes and shifts. We will end the year mostly strong, but 2020 remains the enigma.. Election year recession? It's possible by the end of '19
  2. Donald Trump investigations galore! But what to see!? Everyone around him will be in trouble trouble.. him> .... he will make it to 2020 ...
  3. Democrats in Congress MAY impeach Trump but the Senate will not convict...
  4. Most high ranking officials around Trump will continue to resign or go to jail. It's mayhem at the highest levels!
  5. Weather!? Yep. Another big story. Few snow events but much more in the rain and flooding and tsunamis category... it's going to be a brutal year.
  6. Robots will begin to take over parts of many industries.. people will start seeing the end of their careers thanks to tech.
  7. SEARS will be gone, as will many other major retailers that have been around for 200 years. I guess that's called progress.....
  8. Big big celestial events will cause chaos and fright as blood moons and eclipses reign supreme..  These space events will coincide with strange anomalies on this planet. We live in strange times.
  9. TECH OVERLOAD!!! We will start doing yoga.. seeking out peace.. and anything NOT associated with computers and smartphones...
  10. Ruth Bader Ginsberg will .. well... there will be a new nomination for the Supreme Court.. and the rest of the year of politics will be hell......................

911 outages across the United States

U.S. officials and at least one state said Friday that they have started investigations into a nationwide CenturyLink internet outage that has disrupted 911 service.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage that began Thursday “completely unacceptable” because people who need help couldn’t use the emergency number.

“Its breadth and duration are particularly troubling,” he said.

The commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau will investigate the cause and effect of the outage, he said.

CenturyLink spokeswoman Debra Peterson said the outage “is not related to hacking,” but she declined further comment.

The company said on Twitter that it’s working to restore service and appears to be making progress. It hasn’t provided a cause for the problems.

“Where CenturyLink is the 911 service provider 911 calls are completing,” the company said in a tweet.

Upcoming fear porn for 2019 being revealed: Eclipses, and blood moons abound

2019 is featuring five eclipses, a rare planet transit, one of the best meteor showers and a super blood wolf moon..

The new year will also bring three supermoons, a blue moon, multiple meteor showers, close approach by the moon and Jupiter and several rocket launches..

MORE..

For the first time in three years on January 21, the United States will be able to experience a total lunar eclipse. According to NASA, it will be one of the sky's "most dazzling shows," as the moon will be at its closest point to Earth, making the moon appear slightly bigger and a lot brighter, an event that is often referred to as a "supermoon."

In the late afternoon of July 2, a total solar eclipse will occur over southern parts of Chile and Argentina, and parts of the South Pacific. The entire event will take place from 12:55 to 5:50 p.m. ET, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 3:23 p.m.

The year will also end with a dark bang:

December 26: The annular eclipse occurs when the circumference of the sun shines brightly from behind the moon. This year, the eclipse will begin right at dawn and pass over the Arabian Peninsula and arc over areas of South Asia.

All this, and undoubtedly some more potentially hazardous asteroid fly-bys from rocks we didn't see yet will create the ambiance necessary for another year of total fear porn.

Enjoy the remaining moments of 18 .. as 19 creeps in and we wonder where the past 20 years have gone since the 20th century..

BLUE YORK CITY!

A faulty piece of equipment charged with 138,000 volts of electricity erupted into an “electrical arc flash” that cast an eerie blue glow over the skies of New York, Con Edison officials said Friday morning.

The rare phenomenon blew up at the Astoria East Substation on 20th Avenue and 32nd Street around 9:10 p.m. and could be seen across Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Immediately the internet erupted in a string of Tweets and Facebook messages of 'aliens landing' and 'the end of the world is here!'

Video from the event looked frightening.. it started people on highways, bridges, and public transit.. some people had a tinge of fear in their voice as to why their dark city nights suddenly erupted in to day-time-like blue auras..

“It’s like a thunder-and-lightning event,” explained Con Ed spokesman Bob McGee. “The loud bangs people heard were likely related to the arc striking the ground grid on the substation from a piece equipment that’s 20 feet up in the air and carrying 138,000 volts.”

Many residents who were home at the time experienced flickering lights.

Despite earlier reports, McGee said there was no actual fire at the substation.

“The illumination was caused just by the arc flash. Once the electrical source removed, the arc flash subsided,” he said.

Con Ed officials are now investigating the incident and whether the flash of light was extinguished because the machinery automatically switched off or because it was burned through.

The SINBAD effect

The SINBAD effect

This news today: Entertainment Weekly has unveiled a first look at Will Smith in costume as the Genie in Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” movie, and not everyone is thrilled with it. Why would they be!? We live in the Twitterverse of judgement world….

Smith stars in director Guy Ritchie’s update of the animated classic, alongside Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. People have lampooned the imagery in EW since the release..

TWITTER has issued its typical backlash.. no surprise there at all….

Except one thing.. one little thing that caught my eye on a Facebook page I follow. The comment was made by so many Twitter commentators today: “Sinbad never looked better.”

Now… that Sinbad comment sure is strange, considering that interesting “Mandela Effect” that I have written about previously here.

A few years ago, we talked extensively about the Sinbad movie that never existed.. I wrote then:

This is the latest ‘glitch in the matrix’ that even got me.
I recall this myself. I remember him in the outfit. I don’t quite remember the name of the film as some others do, but I am very clear on my memory of him being in an awful un-funny movie when I was younger.

All of this is fodder for crowds of people who have a new-found appreciation of the Mandela Effect. Every day.

For those yet unaware, or those who do not quite know the label to call their strange memory lapses or sudden shocks to learn that reality is different from what they thought, it is called the Mandela Effect. There are people–and lots of them including Stafire Tor on an old Art Bell show that somewhat started all of this–that believed Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. They recall his funeral. They remember the news headlines and nightly news reporting. And they were shocked that he rose to the presidency of South Africa in the 90s. Because, to them, he was long dead.

Thanks to the new Will Smith movie, this glitch is back in full force, making a joke that Smith looks just like Sinbad looked in the Shazaam movie…

As a matter of fact, people are actually sharing a FAKE photo of Sinbad as “SHAZAAM” in their mockery of the Will Smith movie, not even realizing that SHAZAAM never even existed!!

Tennessee shaking: 4.4 quake

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck eastern Tennessee and could be felt in Atlanta.

The light earthquake occurred Wednesday around 4:14 a.m. about 7 miles (11 kilometers) northeast of Decatur. About 13 minutes later, a 3.3 magnitude aftershock then struck.

There are no reports of injuries. But lots of rattled nerves.

Maybe MORE nerves will be rattled when contemplating this: The quake appeared to occur along the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone, a southwest-to-northeast belt extending from Alabama to far southwest Virginia that is the second-most active quake zone in the central and eastern U.S. behind the more notorious New Madrid zone.

The Krampus Carol by Anthony Bourdain

The HORROR REPORT has always loved Krampus. But not enough to wish to see him instead of Santa..

In this quick holiday story, written by Anthony Bourdain before his untimely death earlier this year, North America is given a brief, dark, humorous peek into the mythos surrounding Krampus, a goat-demon who comes during the Christmas holidays to punish children who misbehaved over the last year. A good pal of Santa Claus, Krampus, and the dread he has instilled in rotten kids for generations, most likely pre-dates Christianity.

This short story is to the point on the Krampus story, more so than American adaptations..

STRANGER BARKS: The CIA made remote controlled dogs during MKUltra

This information being reported by NEWSWEEK after John Greenewald of the BLACK VAULT got secret documents after a FOIA request was answered..

From the article:

Newly released files from “behavior modification,” or mind control, projects conducted as part of the infamous Project MKUltra reveal the CIA experimented in more than controlling humans with psychotropic drugs, electrical shocks and radio waves—they also created field operational, remote-controlled dogs.
The documents were provided under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by John Greenewald, founder of The Black Vault, a site specializing in declassified government records. In one declassified letter (released as file C00021825) a redacted individual writes to a doctor (whose name has also been redacted) with advice about launching a laboratory for experiments in animal mind control. The writer of the letter is already an expert in the field, whose earlier work had culminated with the creation of six remote control dogs, which could be made to run, turn and stop.

Wind breaks on Mars! And we can hear it

It may be best heard with headphones..

The video was shared by NASA and, according to the space agency, captures the sound of a northwest Martian wind blowing at 10 to 15 mph..

"Capturing this audio was an unplanned treat," said Bruce Banerdt, InSight principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in a statement. "But one of the things our mission is dedicated to is measuring motion on Mars, and naturally that includes motion caused by sound waves."

NASA explained that the audio is wind vibrations picked up by two sensors on the lander and not an actual recording from a microphone. However, the Mars rover that will be launched in 2020 will have microphones aboard.

FORTNITE CONDITION! KIDS GOING TO REHAB OVER VIDEO GAME!

Parents who feel they're fighting a losing battle against Fortnite are turning to addiction treatment programs.
This is a cautionary note to parents prior to Christmas.. Video game platforms have a game called FORTNITE. It's free! Yours to have! But it may cost a childhood, according to some alarmists that are portraying the game as something more addictive than even heroin!

MORE from Bloomberg's Jef Feeley and Christopher Palmeri

Debbie Vitany is fighting a losing battle against Fortnite.
Her 17-year-old son, Carson, has been logging 12 hours a day on the video game, searching for weapons and resources in a post-apocalyptic world where the goal is being the last person standing. Teachers complain he falls asleep in class and his grades have plummeted.
“We’d made some progress in getting him to cut down his Fortnite hours and get better sleep, but he’s slipped back into his old habits,” Vitany, who lives near Saginaw, Michigan, said in an interview. “I’ve never seen a game that has such control over kids’ minds.
Vitany’s anguish is echoed by an army of other parents, teachers and bosses around the world grappling with a game that sucks up hours of players’ time -- sometimes to the detriment of other activities. More than 200 million people have registered to play Fortnite, which has become a billion-dollar business for its creator, Epic Games Inc. Some desperate parents have sent their kids to rehab.
“This game is like heroin,” said Lorrine Marer, a British behavioral specialist who works with kids battling game addiction. “Once you are hooked, it’s hard to get unhooked.”

Luckily for the HORROR REPORT, the little HORROR REPORTER is just addicted to the FORTNITE dances. He doesn't like the game much.. and when he plays gets more annoyed than involved.
SO FAR..
But addiction can creep up on you.. I know firsthand. I still sneak in very late night battles in the original PLANTS VS ZOMBIES GARDEN WARFARE from 2014 .... old addictions never die.

Verizon owned TUMBLR bans porn! And its user base leaves in droves

Tumblr announced this week it will ban content featuring nudity from its platform, starting December 17.

The decision was met with lots of backlash from users who view the site as a safe space to explore their identity and sexuality through not safe for work (NSFW) content.

Many Tumblr users have said they plan to abandon the platform for alternative blogging websites that allow explicit content..

Tumblr says it's banning "adult content" from its platform in order to make "a better, more positive" place, but the policy change has some users abandoning the site.

The new policy goes into effect December 17, and will result in the deletion of any content portraying "real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples," Tumblr, a Verizon-owned company, said in its announcement.

Reaction to Tumblr's announcement has been swift and critical across social media. More than 423,000 people have already signed a Change.org petition to "make Tumblr rescind their adult content ban."

This move comes after years of debate of whether Tumblr porn was free  expression and art, or porn. Creator David Karp didn't touch the subject.. When the company sold to Yahoo, people began to get worried..

Corporate drama weighed heavily into this event..

Tumblr says that child pornography was the reason for its app’s sudden disappearance from the iOS App Store. The app has been missing from the store since November 16th, but until now the reason for its absence was unclear — initially Tumblr simply said it was “working to resolve the issue with the iOS app.” However, after Download.com approached Tumblr with sources claiming that the reason was related to the discovery of child pornography on the service, the Yahoo-owned social media network issued a new statement confirming the matter.

And now, with Tumblr acting like the Porn Stealing Grinch before Christmas for users, some are wondering if the website--around more than ten years--is going to be hit with the same fate as another former amazing site for creativity: LIVE JOURNAL.

But if TUMBLR goes, users are going to take it down in the same fashion they used it in: With perceptive and incredible memes with social commentary:

Man coughs blood in the shape of his bronchial tree

This is not for the faint of heart..

Doctors at UC San Francisco Medical Center see a lot of things, but even they were stunned by this.

They were treating a 36-year-old man with end-stage heart failure when he began coughing so violently, that he coughed up a 6-inch-wide blood clot from his lungs in the near-perfect shape of his right bronchial tree.

It has been a while since I posted.. there are a few reasons why..

While I type the post you are about to read, I am listening to an old school song of the disco age.. I recommend it as a background soundtrack while you take in the rest…

This was a really cold Thanksgiving, wasn’t it? … Charlie Brown was just about ready to be grounded for the Macy’s Day Parade until, finally, at the last minute he was set to fly. Without a coat! Just his bare arms out for Al Roker to see!!

This was a Thanksgiving, personally, to forget. But one to equally learn from.

My family and I, on the way to a carb filled dinner of Thanksgiving lure, smacked dead on into a deer. He did not live, and someone most likely had a gruesome surprise at the paper box BLACK FRIDAY morning… Bambi did not make it. Only three days until Deer Season and we already got one with the front bumper of our car…

On Thanksgiving night, my mother ended up in a hospital for a bad fall.. a few days later she is in a higher care unit and having some issues of mental and physical despair ..

I pray to the warriors of time that my Mom will be fine.. that whatever will be, will be.

And whatever will be, will actually be.

After all, we are not in charge.. we are not in the ‘know’ of what will occur..

Tonight, despite the sadness that has encompassed a family, I am thankful for so much that occurred in the past.. the strength my mother had and still does, the beauty inside and outside she had, and the strength she has possessed since I my younger days… back in the time when she would sing me to sleep while a quaint photo of Winnie the Pooh would rest above my bed..

Scientists say mysterious 'Oumuamua' object could be an alien spacecraft

Scientists say mysterious 'Oumuamua' object could be an alien spacecraft:

Scientists have been puzzling over Oumuamua ever since the mysterious space object was observed tumbling past the sun in late 2017. Given its high speed and its unusual trajectory, the reddish, stadium-sized whatever-it-is had clearly come from outside our solar system. But its flattened, elongated shape and the way it accelerated on its way through the solar system set it apart from conventional asteroids and comets.

Now a pair of Harvard researchers are raising the possibility that Oumuamua is an alien spacecraft. As they say in a paper to be published Nov. 12 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, the object “may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth vicinity by an alien civilization.”

Rise in melatonin for sleep aid

This from the UK GUARDIAN:

Tens of thousands of children and young people are being given the hormone melatonin to help them sleep, prompting concern that the medicine is being handed out too readily with little evidence of its long-term effectiveness or safety.

Melatonin, which is produced naturally by the body in dark environments to help sleep preparations, has been authorised for use by people aged over 55. It has been hailed as a less addictive alternative to insomnia drug treatments.

Despite the fact it is not licensed for use by any other age group, 117,085 people under 18 were given melatonin “off label” – the term used for when a drug is given for an unapproved indication or in an unapproved age group – to aid sleep in the 2017-18 financial year. In the first four months of the current financial year, 69,280 prescriptions were given to under-18s.

The WEBMD verdict is this: Melatonin is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth appropriately, long-term.Melatonin has been used safely for up to 2 years in some people. However, it can cause some side effects including headache, short-term feelings of depression, daytime sleepiness, dizziness, stomach cramps, and irritability..

But why the overwhelming need? What is the issue within America and the developed world that is leading to such awful sleep problems?

A recent report running in the CHICAGO SUN TIMES  reports on one expert who concludes:

Before trying sleep aids, return to basics like establishing a regular sleep schedule, Tsai said. She sympathizes with parents, and in the last five years has seen an influx of teens in her own sleep clinic fighting some serious emotional battles.

“There’s more electronic usage and I feel like our teens have higher rates of anxiety and/or depression and that plays a role in our sleep,” she said.

Afraid of the effects of melatonin and effectiveness in general? Maybe CBD gummies are the way to go instead.

One article tells of a “sleepyhead” who was put to sleep by the them..

The first night I took the gummies, I was convinced they worked. I felt less stressed on the Sunday night before work and within thirty to forty minutes after getting into bed I was asleep. However, my success was short-lived. I don’t know if I abused the gummies by taking them in the day time (when I was also stressed) or built a nightly tolerance, but after a week or so, I was awake again. The 10mg of cbd oil that the Sunday Scaries contained was not doing it for me anymore.

A Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp says that there’s a sexist connotation with the phrase “the final girl,” as male characters earn a nickname that doesn’t specify gender. ..

“I don’t think we should call her a ‘final girl’ anymore,” Langenkamp shared with the L.A. Times. “Because one, I want a boy to be able to play a part like this, and they’re never going to call him a ‘final boy’ — they just call him a hero. Just call a hero a hero, regardless of gender.”“To me, it’s at least a little less offensive than ‘final girl’ in some ways; at least she’s at the top of the heap — she’s a queen,” the actress pointed out. “I just hope that for women in my shoes who get the opportunity to play a part like Nancy [in A Nightmare on Elm Street], it doesn’t take them so long to think that they did something right.”

“I’m sitting here like any other scream queen in Hollywood, hoping that they revive their franchise,” Langenkamp shared with Entertainment Weekly. “I’m not alone! I know of lots of other horror heroines who have this little bit of spring in their step thinking about the chance of perhaps being in [new versions of] the movies that they helped make famous as young people. It’s kind of crazy, but it’s definitely something I would love to do.”

Whitey Bulger was killed when cells were unlocked for breakfast

Convicted Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger was beaten early Tuesday morning when cell doors were unlocked so inmates could leave to eat breakfast, according to a law-enforcement official familiar with the investigation into Bulger’s death at a West Virginia prison.

The onetime kingpin of a ruthless gang was pronounced dead soon after, and federal authorities are investigating his death at the U.S. Penitentiary Hazelton as a homicide. One of the suspects is a mafia hitman from Massachusetts serving a life sentence at the same prison, the law enforcement official said.

TEARS OF BLOOD!

The unnamed man, 52, is thought to have visited a hospital in the Sicilian city of Messina after blood started leaking from both his eyes.

Initially, the bleeding only carried on for a couple of minutes before it stopped.

However while he was waiting to be seen by the medical staff it started again.

Doctors discovered the man had non-cancerous tumours underneath his eyelids and diagnosed he was suffering from a rare condition called haemolacria.

These tumours are made of blood vessel cells, which are often seen on the skin of children and are sometimes known as strawberry marks.

After the Salem Witch Trials, There Was the New England Vampire Panic

After the Salem Witch Trials, There Was the New England Vampire Panic:

On March 17, 1892, a group of local men dug up the three deceased members of the Brown family in search of a sign that one of them was rising from the grave at night to suck the energy from the living. After nearly 10 years, Mary Olive and Mary Eliza were almost entirely decomposed. But Mercy, buried only a few months previous in the cold New England weather, was almost perfectly preserved. The vampire hunters of Exeter had found their target.

“When a ghost shows up in a story, it is often a way to talk about what cannot be said, what cannot be acknowledged — whether that is a repressed desire, a family secret, an unpunished crime or a genocide that some do not want to reckon with.”

For more than a month now, a European orbiter circling Marshas been watching a long, plume-like cloud on the Red Planet.

The cloud has remained in place over a mountain called Arsia Mons near the Martian equator since Sept. 13, according to a statement released by the European Space Agency (ESA). But that location is just a coincidence, the agency adds. No volcanic process is producing the cloud — the volcano hasn’t been active in about 50 million years, scientists believe.

Gab.com issues Statement On The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting

20 MINUTES OF TERROR IN PITTSBURGH

This is how the AFP is reporting on Robert Bowers’ horrific crime in Squirrel Hill:

Gunman Robert Bowers only needed 20 minutes to sow terror at the Tree of Life synagogue in the US city of Pittsburgh, where congregants had gathered peacefully for Shabbat services marking a day of rest.

Shortly before 10 am (1400 GMT) the 46-year-old Bowers – who had penned virulent anti-Semitic messages on social networks – burst into the synagogue armed with an assault rifle and three handguns.

Stephen Weiss, a member of the congregation who was inside the building, told the Tribune-Review newspaper he heard dozens of shots coming from the front lobby.

“We had services going on in the chapel when we heard a loud noise in the lobby area,” he said. “I recognized it as gunshots.”

Like any other Saturday, people from three different congregations were scattered throughout rooms in the building, located in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood that is historically the heart of Jewish life in greater Pittsburgh.

Bowers entered a room where a baby-naming ceremony was taking place. He rained bullets, killing 11 people, all of them adults.

As he attempted to leave the synagogue, he found himself face-to-face with a uniformed officer calling for reinforcement.

He barricaded himself on the building’s third floor and was taken into custody after a shootout with police.

On Gab, an Extremist-Friendly Site, Pittsburgh Shooting Suspect Aired His Hatred in Full

On Gab, an Extremist-Friendly Site, Pittsburgh Shooting Suspect Aired His Hatred in Full:

THIS IS DISGUSTING

Early Saturday, moments before the police say he barged into a Pittsburgh synagogue and opened fire, Robert D. Bowers’s anti-Semitic rage finally boiled over and he posted one last message online.
But he didn’t turn to Facebook or Twitter. Instead, the man accused of killing at least 11 people went to Gab, a two-year-old social network that bills itself as a “free speech” alternative to those platforms, and that has become a haven for white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other extremists. There, he posted a signoff to his followers.
“I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered,” Mr. Bowers wrote. “Screw your optics, I’m going in.”
The shooting in Pittsburgh came on the heels of another violent episode involving social media extremism. Cesar Sayoc Jr., the suspect in the pipe bomb mailing campaign, had a history of posting hateful and violent messages on Facebook and Twitter that were laced with misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Recreation Director Laurie Stasiak revealed that the reason they’ve banned clowns costumes is that they’re just too frightening for some children.

why? …they say they are just too scary.

Laurie Stasiak said in an email to the newspaper.  "In the past few years many clown costumes have been given a very scary and evil look.  Many scary and horror movies are centered around these types of characters.  About 3 years [ago] there were national incidents in the news were people were dressing up as clowns and scaring people and in some cases assaulting them.  Many people have phobias and anxiety about clowns.  It’s because of this that we asked people not to dress up as clowns for this community event

Nick Pope: Google Earth blind spot over experimental military base could be where US government hides crashed UFOs

Jenna Bush-Hager Recalls Spooky White House Experience

She recalled a specific episode that occurred during the eight years in which she and her twin sister Barbara lived in the White House while her father, George W. Bush, was president. According to Hager, the two first daughters shared a room at the historic home during that time and, one night, they were roused from their sleep when her phone inexplicably rang. Then, she marveled, “all of a sudden, we started hearing 1920’s piano music, clear as day, coming out of the fireplace.”

The haunted happenings did not stop there, Hager said, as the same thing unfolded a week later, except this time it was opera music. Although she and her sister “talked ourselves out of” the possibility that they had some kind of ghostly experience, a conversation with a longtime worker at the White House seemingly confirmed their fears. After incredulously telling him the story about the spooky music that she and her sister had heard, he replied, “oh, Jenna, you wouldn’t believe what I’ve heard.”

It’s the latest in a series of mysterious illnesses that are baffling doctors. Two young patients were recently treated at Scottish Rite after they fell ill and then woke up partially paralyzed.

Doctors are still working to figure out what causes acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, but they tell Channel 2 Action News in Georgia that the rare condition is similar to polio, in that it can cause muscle weakness or partial paralysis.

NICK POPE ARGUES THAT THE TERM “UFO” IS OBSOLETE

Pope wrote his reasoning in the GUARDIAN

A first step in reframing the debate might be changing the language. The term “UFO” has become as obsolete and baggage-laden as the now largely-defunct “flying saucer”. Both are widely, but wrongly, regarded as being synonymous with “extraterrestrial spacecraft”, when self-evidently all the phrase should mean is something in the sky that the observer cannot identify. When the question “do you believe in UFOs?” is misinterpreted as “do you think we’re being visited by aliens?” then we clearly have a problem.

We addressed this in the MoD in the 1990s by replacing “UFO” with “UAP”, for Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. It got us increased funding and made a few senior officials take the matter more seriously, because they felt we were looking at a science problem, not a science fiction mystery.

AND MORE…

During Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, for which Podesta was the campaign chair, she occasionally discussed UAPs and in one interview on the Jimmy Kimmel show she corrected the host for using the term “UFO”. We have yet to learn what Donald Trump thinks about UAPs, but his enthusiasm for a Space Force has certainly created a few conspiracy theories.

When it comes to UAPs, truth really is stranger than fiction. It turns out that AATIP was largely the brainchild of the then Senate majority leader Harry Reid, and that much of the work was contracted out to Bigelow Aerospace, run by former budget hotel magnate (and believer in extraterrestrial visitation) Robert Bigelow. A 2009 letter from Harry Reid about AATIP reads like science fiction in places.

On the podcast, Roman said that his mother gave in to his picky eating, allowing him to eat only pizza for dinner. In his grade school days, Roman mixed that up with a peanut butter sandwich every day for lunch. But when he entered the work force he started dining out for lunch — at pizza joints.

Now, he’s back to peanut butter and bread for lunch. But the fact remains that he not only ate pizza for dinner for over 30 years, he also ate it for lunch for at least a good 10 of those.

The remains of a 10-year-old biting on a stone have been unearthed by archaeologists in a fifth century Italian cemetery, evidence suggesting a “vampire burial” to prevent the child’s return from the dead.

In northern Italy, where the discovery was made, they are calling it the “Vampire of Lugnano.“

"I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s extremely eerie and weird,” said University of Arizona archaeologist David Soren, who has overseen archaeological excavations at the site since 1987.

Evidence collected from the bones suggest the child was infected with malaria at the time it died, The Independent reported.

NEWS ROUNDUP SUNDAY OCTOBER 21 2018

PROJECTIONS: As reported by Billboard, Halloween pulled in $33.3 million from 3,928 theaters. Projections have the film amassing $80 million by the close of the weekend, which would place Halloween in a tie for the best October movie opening weekend. The record of $80 million was just set two weeks ago by Venom. October is known for being a slow month at the box office, but Venom and Halloween helped breathe life into the dormant sales.

Danny Leiner, who directed the popular slacker comedies Dude, Where's My Car? and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, has died. He was 57. Leiner died Thursday at his home in Los Angeles after a long battle with cancer, his brother, Ken, told The Hollywood Reporter.

DATELINE A CALIFORNIA FARM: Kings County Sheriff's Office, California, received an unusual call on October 18 from a walnut farmer who claimed to have found a strange, large metal object of unknown origin that had smashed into his orchard, local news outlet Kron4 reported, citing the sheriff's office. When officers arrived at the site, they found a helmet-like, charred, metallic object and assumed that it was part of a satellite.

A small space rock made an extremely close approach yesterday (October 19, 2018). The close flyby of Asteroid 2018 UA occurred just hours after being detected by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. Limited observations did not allow for precise trajectory calculations, but estimates suggest the small asteroid passed at a distance between 4,536 miles to 9,540 miles (7,300 km to 15,353 km) from Earth’s surface. For comparison, meteorological and television satellites orbit at some 22,300 miles (35,888 km) from our planet’s surface, which means the asteroid’s approach was one of the closest registered.

The HALLOWEEN 40 review. Spoilers included

Halloween fans have been waiting for the moment.. John Carpenter retiring to assist in the re-creation, re-direction, re-imaging of the original 1978 classic 40 years later.  Finally, it is being released in box offices nationwide. A few early releases occurred last night.

In estimates Friday morning, Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s Halloween is being projected by our industry sources at around $10M, which arguably is the second-best preview night for a horror pic after New Line’s It banked $13.5M from 3,500 theaters on Sept 7, 2017.

And being that I am not from an elite crowd of reporters or paid reviewers, I had to wait for the early showings Thursday evening.

....without further ado, spoilers included, my thoughts on HALLOWEEN 40.

Quite frankly.. they should have left it just be.

First the two main positive takeaways from the film: The soundtrack was amazing. John Carpenter's modernized versions of the sounds of Halloween's score was dynamic and at times an homage to the past coupled with breathtaking synthesized sounds of the modern era. It is not to be dismissed.. On a scale of ten, the soundtrack is a ten--the movie not so much.

The other part of the film that I absolutely positive adored and loved was the opening credit roll .. (NOT THE OPENING SCENE, we will get there in one minute) ..The opening credits featured the piano version of the Halloween theme blasting in stereo across the theater with a lifeless smashed pumpkin slowly coming back to shape -- almost a metaphor that the "Shape" is rising again.  Halloween fans will most assuredly love that they began the film the same way the original began, with the pumpkin and music. It created an immediate eerie feel in the theater.. people's tension, watching the credits roll with that classic song in forcing itself into their heads like a freight train, was palpable.

This movie, it would seem, was going to be something.

And something it sure was.

I gave the soundtrack a ten out of ten earlier.

I will give the movie a 2 out of 10. It would have been a 1 if it wasn't for Jamie Lee Curtis' performance.

The movie's premise opens with this: Podcasters somehow were able to snatch the original Shatner mask away from their "friends at the attorney general's office" .. The unlikely leak only goes further as the newer doctor who takes over for Loomis allow the podcasters to enter the grounds of Smiths Grove to interview Michael Myers. He allows them to hold up the mask to him..he allows them to rile up the entire set of patients who are chained to the concrete ground. The scene was ridiculous ... the plot line of podcasters snatching the mask was actually just stupid for me, for the lack of a better word.

We travel now to the world of Laure Strode. She suffers from the trauma of 1978. She has also built a fortress and collected guns in order to battle Myers when he comes back -- she lived her life knowing he would apparently.

Her family is a wreck with mental strife.. the clear indications of PTSD are evident. Her performance in the film was formidable. She was good. She was the only piece of acting that saved the movie from a downright 0 out of 10 for me!

Cutting to the chase, a bus crashed. Myers escaped. The podcasters are killed. He gets his mask back. Myers kills yet another gas station attendant and gets his suit back. He stalks the neighborhood during trick or treating...

Here are where two problems start and never stop.

In the original Halloween, the magic was not seeing Myers' face. It was knowing that the SHAPE stalked ..that the Shape watched.. that the Shape took measured time to plot out a strategy of fearful killing. In this film? He randomly goes house to house racking up a largely ridiculous high amount of bodies in his path. Murders for no reason.. murders just or the sake of pleasing the audience of blood thirsty gore fans that will likely litter this weekend's movie theaters.

The other portion that, maybe someone will debate me on, is Myers' first murder A child. Horror fans and critics have long debated how children and death should be treated in movies. This film utilizes that and immediately showcases Myers as a heartless demon who will even kill a child to get where he needs to go.   If the movie was good, I could forgive that. The movie is abominable, so I can only further say that the kid-kill was a misstep in a series of them.

Flash forward to the movie sequence of events, which gets even more ridiculous:  A set of comedy lines in the midst of tragedy did not seem to flow. Neither did the oddly choreographed high school dance scene that left viewers wondering why they couldn't be in a high school that looked like that. A doctor who decides he wants to put on Michael Myers' mask and kill..and an ending scene that seemed so rushed and so not inclusive of the nostalgia of the original.

And what do you have?
In my humble opinion you have a train wreck of rubbish.
Suffering garbage that stunk the theater to high heaven.

But an amazing soundtrack. A 10 out of 10. The new theme songs for modern Halloween! But sadly not the movie to go with it.

This season, if you want a good scare, check out Netflix' HAUNTED HILLS HOUSE. I will review that further once my bingeing on it completes.

:)
