Unusual laser emission from the Ant Nebula

Some space-aged food for thought to consider this weekend.

An international team of astronomers have discovered an unusual laser emission that suggests the presence of a double star system hidden at the heart of the "spectacular" Ant Nebula.

The extremely rare phenomenon is connected to the death of a star and was discovered in observations made by European Space Agency's (ESA) Herschel space observatory.

A nebula is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases. The Ant Nebula earns its nickname from the twin lobes that resemble the head and body of an ant.

The recent Herschel observations have shown that the dramatic demise of the central star in the core of the Ant Nebula is even more theatrical than implied by its colourful appearance in visible images -- such as those taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

WEINSTEIN HORROR REVEALED!

Brian De Palma is returning to the horror genre with a new script inspired by Harvey Weinstein.

He made“Carrie,” and now according to the French publication Le Parisien (via The Playlist) that he will be taking on Weinstein’s sexual harassment and abuse in a new film.

Weinstein will not be a named character in the film, but he will inspire the movie’s narrative.



“I’m writing a film about this scandal, a project I’m talking about with a French producer,” De Palma said. “My character won’t be named Harvey Weinstein but it will be a horror film, with a sexual aggressor, and it will take place in the film industry.”

A.A. Berezin of the National Research University of Electronic Technology in Russia started by suggesting that ‘biological organisms like ourselves or rogue AIs that rebelled against their creators’ may have already destroyed every species in their way without even realising what they’ve done. 

He has published an early version of a paper which describes the ‘first in, last out’ solution to the Fermi Paradox, which suggests that the first lifeform to manage to travel through the stars ‘necessarily eradicates all competition to fuel its own expansion’.

This story has attracted worldwide attention because, above all else, it makes for some good clickbait on social network ghettos. But the theory could be as true as just about any other one, no?

‘I am not suggesting that a highly developed civilization would consciously wipe out other lifeforms,’ Berezin wrote. ‘Most likely, they simply won’t notice, the same way a construction crew demolishes an anthill to build real estate because they lack incentive to protect it. ‘This problem is similar to the infamous “Tragedy of the commons”. The incentive to grab all available resources is strong, and it only takes one bad actor to ruin the equilibrium, with no possibility to prevent them from appearing at interstellar scale. ‘One rogue AI can potentially populate the entire supercluster with copies of itself, turning every solar system into a supercomputer, and there is no use asking why it would do that. All that matters is that it can.’

According to experts who opine in box office numerology, the film may bring in betwee $140 and $150million during its opening North American stint ... 

Universal has opted for a staggered release pattern overseas, starting on June 6 in Belgium, France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, and the Philippines. June 7 will see launches additional territories, including in Croatia, Greece, Hong Kong, Russia, Spain, Thailand, and Ukraine.

Expansion continues on June 8 in the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Austria, and Bulgaria. China and Egypt will open on June 15. Along with the U.S., June 22 will see openings in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela.

So often recently ,the North American box office matters much less than the global markets.  This time, with the staggered effect, each market will matter as much as the other..

Along with several others, Sam Lutfi -- who managed Britney Spears during her public meltdown in 2007 -- is also named in the suit and accused of supplying illicit drugs to Love's daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, as well as kidnapping, attempted murder, false imprisonment, extortion and more. 

Adding more crazy to the already crazy issue: Actor Ross Butler, star of 13 Reasons Why, is also accused of playing a role.

Oswald Cobblepot isn't don't with BATMAN yet

Could the PENGUIN be the villain!?

Excitement builds in the world of Gothamites..

Variety’s Justin Kroll says that Oswald Cobblepot will be the one confounding the Dark Knight, posting the following on Twitter:

“Take this with a grain of salt as things are constantly changing in the DCEU but I’m hearing the Penguin is possibly the choice to play the main villain in THE BATMAN. Sources add even if Reeves decide to go another route the studio could then make him the main villain in BOP.”

This is just a rumor at this point.

Reeves is still working on the script, so that could always change but of the multiple BIRDS OF PREY scripts submitted, one does have the Penguin as the main heavy. Either way, it seems WB wants this character cast in the universe sooner rather then later.

The Penguin first appeared in Detective Comics #58 all the way back in December of 1941 .. let's all hope we see him again ... it's one of the best villains in any comic that ever existed.

The "face" is ghostly white, with dark staring eyes, and what appears to be a hand reaching out for her son's shoulder.

In an interview with Collider this week, Dave Bautista discussed reactions from friends and family to the end of ‘Infinity War’ and how he had to reassure them his character of Drax the Destroyer will be back:

“I got a lot of texts saying, ‘I can’t believe you’re dead, your character is dead.’ They were really like heartbroken and I was like ‘I’m gonna be in [‘Avengers 4’]. I’m gonna be in ‘Guardians 3.” I don’t know how they’re bringing me back, but yeah, somehow I’m going to make it because, as far as I know, I am going to be in ‘Guardians 3,’ so I have to be back.”

Weinstein's day of reckoning

Strange booms that go burst in the night

The pattern of horns trumphets and booms that began around 2011 continues..  and the loud noises being heard in Pennsylvania are only intensifying along with conspiracy theories of their source ..

A joint-investigation into the mysterious booms rattling the communities of Bucks and Lehigh Counties reveals the cause to be explosions, according to police.

Authorities said Tuesday that more than 20 explosions during the early-morning hours are the reason for the booms happening in the area since April 2.

But there is no further word on where the explosions are coming from..

Word on the Sesame Street: Happytime Lawsuit

Sesame Workshop filed a suit against the upcoming movie The Happytime Murders, an R-rated movie produced by The Jim Henson Company that recently debuted a trailer that ends with an ejaculating puppet. 

The Sesame Street rights holders argue that imagery like that (“explicit, profane, drug-using, misogynistic, violent, copulating, and even ejaculating puppets”) will cause irrevocable damage to their brand, which has spent nearly 50 years building up a public trust and establishing itself as a destination for family-friendly children’s programming..

Makers of the movie got creative in their response..





STX Entertainment issued a statement on the matter saying puppet lawyer Fred, Esq. will represent the studio in the lawsuit. The studio even provided a photo of Fred.

The private hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 will end in the coming days, a search firm said Tuesday, about four years after the plane's disappearance sparked one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries.

The Malaysia Airlines jet vanished in March 2014 with 239 people -- mostly from China -- on board, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

No sign of the plane was found in a 46,000-square mile sea search zone and the Australian-led hunt, the largest in aviation history, was suspended in January last year.

Roseanne reruns will be canceled on the three channels starting Wednesday, a Viacom spokesperson said.

The entire event was to force people to consider what would really happen in the face of some worldwide global disease catastrophe that struck the healthy, the aged, and the young alike.

There is a recent outbreak in South India that have renewed interest in the Nipah virus—something discovered 20 years ago..

It spreads through bats and pigs to humans. It has been known to kill up to three-quarters of those infected..

About five days ago, news broke that at least 90 were in quarantine. Last night, officials confirmed that the casualties are mounting in the country. The death toll officially stands at 14 at this time. 

The Nipah disease is brain-eating. It is causing fear among the walking living in Southern India. And beyond.

The entire world has seemingly been on constant high alert about almost everything and anything over the past decade or so.. Real news looks more like fiction and fictitious disease exercises seem more like reality. 

We have been constantly warned with each new or old disease discovered or rediscovered that it could be the next novel strain of worldwide disease.

We collectively hope that will never be the case.

However those visiting cemeteries yesterday for Memorial Day may have been greeted with an inconvenient truth if looking at dates on headstones: 1918 was a busy year for funeral homes. The great flu then killed millions worldwide. One hundred years later, now, we wonder if the same will occur all over again..

The FBI issued an urgent warning to everyone who owns an internet router: Turn it off and turn it back on, and do it right away.

According to the New York Times, "a sophisticated malware system linked to Russia" has already infected thousands of routers. The malware is capable of blocking web traffic, collecting information that passes through home and office routers, and disabling your devices entirely.

The Russian hackers are using something called VPNFilter malware to target home and small office routers. Aside from restarting your router by turning it off and on, the FBI also advises using encryption, upgrading firmware, and changing your passwords.

The hacking has been attributed to Fancy Bear, the Russian group that hacked the DNC.

So now the FBI is making the urgent request: HELP FIGHT THE ATTACK AND RESET YOUR ROUTER TODAY..

71% rating on the reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest score for a "Star Wars" film since "Attack of the Clones"..

The movie bombed this weekend, unable to muster up even the conservative numbers that studio executives had hoped for..

The movie took in $14.1 million at Thursday-night previews, a record for Memorial Day (beating "At World's End," which took in $13.2 million)

Disney had been predicting $115 million for the weekend. $101 mil later, the mouse is a bit red faced..

Yes, a strong movie for any other time. But not for STAR WARS. And maybe a bigger issue: Not for Memorial Day.

The weekend just ain't what it used to be when it comes to the summer movie kickoff season..

Maybe a new pattern?

Last year, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" opened over Memorial Day weekend and took in $78.4 million from Friday to Monday. That was just under its projections of $80 million to $85 million and the lowest opening for a "Pirates" movie since the first one, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" ($46.6 million).

It is often a mistake to watch the weekend box office results for any judgement of a movie. But this is business.

And Disney made an effort to ensure their business for decades would be endless forays into the STAR WARS universe.. Toy lines.. spinoffs... sequels. Prequels.

And already? We seem done with it.

The magic of ROGUE ONE was that it was STAR WARS related, contained the storyline and respected the past. The newest sequels in the series lack a magic, one that ROGUE ONE briefly tapped into. And SOLO? .. The movie has been opening to less than great reviews.

The toy lines are going unsold at stores. Where toys are actually still sold.. 

Kids? They moved on. The majority of audiences for the STAR WARS movies this century are people who also attended last century.

Disney's biggest mistake may have been hubris. And now they are stuck with a movie from a galaxy too close to home..

Shocking images of Maryland: Epic flooding

Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency and went to the scene of the devastation Sunday night. He said in a tweet that he has directed the Maryland Emergency Management Agency to assist in helping the city recover.

A flood emergency was first issued in Ellicott City at 4:40 p.m. Two hours later, National Weather Service warned another inch-and-a-half of rain was expected to fall before 7 p.m.

“This is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC situation,” the National Weather Service tweeted.

Disney and Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story is struggling in its debut at the Memorial Day box office, where it's coming in well behind expectations with an estimated three-day debut of $83.3 million-plus and projected four-day debut of $101 million (numbers will be updated Monday morning). 

That's even worse than forecasts earlier in the weekend.
