The Day After Tomorrow 9 years later..

I forgot how great this movie was in a disaster edge of your seat kind of way.. It's on HBO and I'm re-scared just like I was when I first saw it in 2004..

I was scared by weather then .. Little did I know how much I'd be even more frightened by 2012 and now the prospects for 2013.. The climate is changing rapidly. No doubt about it... We are powerless in the end..

I recall reviewing the movie for the HORROR REPORT way back in 2004. I think I was critical of the imagery but not of the story. It was a typical disaster movie, big budget, all that. But there was a deeper meaning in it that we should have all taken away. And now, in 2013, have we learned anything? Would THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW may more sense now if it was released this year instead of then?

Fun fact: What inspired the DAY AFTER TOMORROW? None other than the book by Whitley Streiber and Art Bell, THE COMING GLOBAL SUPERSTORM. When that book came out Matt Lauer laughed at them both on the TODAY show... Today we name hurricanes 'superstorms'...Few laugh.

And that scares me deeply..

Snowy box office weekend

Cold and snow is being blamed for lousy box office numbers.. Friday night figures trickling in.. HANSEL AND GRETAL was able to top the box office with a lower-than-expected $6 million opening night .. It's projected to make around for $17 million the weekend--but that is decidedly lower than the predicted $50 mil...

Could snow really have that large of an impact? Major metro areas in the Northeast hardly got an inch..

But it's a good excuse when a much anticipated film flops during the cold weeks of late January...

Just when you thought death panels weren't going to happen

..maybe you should think again.
In Japan, a government official said the elderly should just hurry up and die.
In the UK, doctors feverishly work to not work feverishly on patients who are going to pass away--letting it just happen faster. Some countries in Europe are on the verge of allowing a 21st century medical eugenics tyrannical system to take over.
Perhaps the Georgia Guidestones are an inspiration around the planet.

And now this: The Associated Press, unbiased right?, allowed its medical writer, Mike Stobbe, to question aloud whether we should just let fat smokers die and be done with it. I mean, they are just in the way, right? With their large obese stomachs protruding from their bodies.. and the disgusting smelly cigarettes destroying their lives.. They a product of human waste. They are meaningless. They should just be permitted to go into a hole, take a bullet in the head, and rid themselves from us, so we can have more space, better air, and less money going to their medical needs. While Stobbe from the AP didn't quite say it that way, what he did say just sounded more professional:
Faced with the high cost of caring for smokers and overeaters, experts say society must grapple with a blunt question: Instead of trying to penalize them and change their ways, why not just let these health sinners die?
He went on to write,

It's tricky to play the insurance game with overweight people, because science is still sorting things out. While obesity is clearly linked with serious health problems and early death, the evidence is not as clear about people who are just overweight.
That said, public health officials shouldn't shy away from tough anti-obesity efforts, said Callahan, the bioethicist. Callahan caused a public stir this week with a paper that called for a more aggressive public health campaign that tries to shame and stigmatize overeaters the way past public health campaigns have shamed and stigmatized smokers.
National obesity rates are essentially static, and public health campaigns that gently try to educate people about the benefits of exercise and healthy eating just aren't working, Callahan argued. We need to get obese people to change their behavior. If they are angry or hurt by it, so be it, he said.
Perhaps we should just stop and think long and hard before we even attempt going down this road. The slope into hell.. We start with overweight smokers.. do we end with skinny mocha drinkers?
We hate the elderly.. rid us of them! and the kids too! why do we need them?
Who picks who dies? Who decides? I guess those death panels ... that don't exist.

Anonymous strikes: Online hacktivists gain control of US Sentencing Commission website



The news broke very late Friday night.. Anonymous, the group blamed for historic hackings in the past, struck again. This time it was in response to the suicide of Aaron Swartz. REDDIT's Swartz's suicide was blamed by some on the government's overzealous crackdown on his operations. Today, USSC.GOV was taken down and replaced by this message:
Citizens of the world,Anonymous has observed for some time now the trajectory of justice in the United States with growing concern. We have marked the departure of this system from the noble ideals in which it was born and enshrined. We have seen the erosion of due process, the dilution of constitutional rights, the usurpation of the rightful authority of courts by the "discretion" or prosecutors. We have seen how the law is wielded less and less to uphold justice, and more and more to exercise control, authority and power in the interests of oppression or personal gain."
Family of Swartz and friends alike said he killed himself after the government hounded him for posting documents free online--documents the government accused him of downloading illegally..

The line has been crossed, said Anonymous..
Also included with the hack is a threat from the group: They intend on releasing 'sensitive information' about the Justice Department.. The FBI said it was aware of the threat and handling it as a 'criminal investigation'..  CNN also reported this in its dispatch today:

A YouTube video accompanied the message, and made use of images from Cold War nuclear scenarios and games of strategy. The letter contained nuclear metaphors to refer to chunks of embarrassing information.
The hackers said they have obtained "enough fissile material for multiple warheads," which it would launch against the justice department and "its associated executive branches."
It gave the "warheads" the names of U.S. Supreme Court justices, such as Thomas.Warhead1 after Justice Clarence Thomas or Ginsburg.Warhead1 after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.


And at this time, 12:12 pm on the East Coast Saturday afternoon, USSC.GOV is still down for the count.

Obama's face attacked by fly drones!?

The attack of the flies took place yesterday.  President Obama was speaking when a fly (at least one) continued to land on his face during his event.. photos snapped of the event and prominently placed on the Drudge Report with "Fly guy" as the headline show the President with the insect on his forehead, his cheek, and his lip.

The HORROR REPORT wrote last night that conspiracy theories are sure to rise..

I read the story from the telegraph that you linked about flies having constant battles with obama. i think everyone has it wrong. sure, maybe its proof that he's a reptilian or something like that, but i think it's even weirder! I think it is a small drone landing on him! a spy drone, maybe from the middle east or russia. we do it, right? why can't someone else. they make drones as small as gnats so a fly wouldn't be a big surprise. I don't know what intelligence they gained, though, landing on obama i am sure little intelligence could be gathered.
This site has some creative thinkers, like 'Rob' who emailed me the thought that drones are to blame .. So has Obama been attacked by drones since his first campaign for president? Or does it reveal a paranormal side to the president.

The class of 99 loses a wonderful soul

A little personal issue tonight is on my mind..

I have become aware of some troubling news tonight ... a friend of mine and a fellow graduate from the class of 1999 somewhere in Pennsylvania, somewhere in time, has passed away way too early after a long battle with breast cancer. I won't give details of her full name or location, but I decided to write something about this to share some thoughts...

Her name is Lori. And she was filled with life from the moment I met her way back in my high school years. I saw her about two years ago for the first time in ages .. she was in a darker place, battling cancer, and fighting for her life. But living each moment..

I did not speak to her for several months, but that last time I did she seemed ok. She seemed happy, and truly joyful to have moments of life to enjoy.

Today I came to understand that she passed into the next realm, whatever that realm may be..

She is gone too early.. she is gone to fast. The class of 99 is without someone --already. I pray for Lori and her family.. I cannot imagine the grief.

A few months ago I had a Facebook chat with her, in which she was asking me about my then 17-month-old and she was telling me about her 9-year-old.  It would so happen to be that last time I spoke to her, unfortunately. During our conversation she explained she just got done having chemotherapy that very day. But it is what she said about family that stuck with me.. Lori said something that now haunts me as much as it does inspire me. Talking about her own children, children she loved, she said, "I wake every morning for them."

I don't know what will happen tomorrow when she does not wake for them. I don't know the rules about death. No one does.. We don't understand life let alone death. We seldom realize that the final hours could be at our doorstep, waiting and lurking to take us.. We don't want to come to grips with our own collective demise. And why should we!?
We have people to wake for. We have things to do. Lori did.. and she turned away from the darkness that so many would have succumbed to and embraced light instead. She embraced hope and happiness, and stopped counting down the days and instead began living each moment to the very fullest..

Life takes turns we never expect. Sometimes you meet someone who is living proof that you can live each day with joy and wonder, and live it like it's your last..

GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
    Old time is still a-flying :
And this same flower that smiles to-day
    To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
    The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
    And nearer he's to setting.

HORRIFIC HOUSEKEEPING: Call me baby

This is the mid-winter slump, if you did not know that already. Today is supposedly the most depressing day of the year (bills are due, and somehow we get treated to AP and Reuters dispatches each January 20ish to stories about how we should all be sad right now, one month or so after the upbeat time of Christmas).. I am not sad, so I guess as usual I am not marching to the beat of the drum. If there is a drum I'd love to know the drummer..

Nonetheless, I just wanted to put out that every now and then on the top part of HORROR REPORT, you may see something that says "lines are open" or "call me now."  I am being literal.  When that appears, it means I am available for phone calls if you are using Skype. You can simply click on the link and you can call me through Skype.. I will try to answer all calls I get, and it could be a great way for me to interact with readers..

Today is supposedly the most depressing day of the year (bills are due, and somehow we get treated to AP and Reuters dispatches each January 20ish to stories about how we should all be sad right now, one month or so after the upbeat time of Christmas).. I am not sad, so I guess as usual I am not marching to the beat of the drum. If there is a drum I'd love to know the drummer..

Nonetheless, I just wanted to put out that every now and then on the top part of HORROR REPORT, you may see something that says "lines are open" or "call me now."  I am being literal.  When that appears, it means I am available for phone calls if you are using Skype. You can simply click on the link and you can call me through Skype.. I will try to answer all calls I get, and it could be a great way for me to interact with readers..

Even when the lines are closed, I am always available at Bryan@horrorreport.com. Every now and then, once in a blue moon, you can find me on AOL using the name Loomicide. But I'm told AOL instant messenger is too 20th century to keep using..

It was supposed to be about hope and change. Instead it ended badly, with a rapper's performance slamming President Obama and bringing up 9/11 conspiracies... and it all happened last night at one of President Obama's events.

Russia is cold in the winter but recent weather seems unprecedented







A snow 'tsunami' has swallowed cars, buildings.. Towns..Russia Today reports this:
While the snowstorms have caused inconvenience for large population centers in western Russia, they have been life-threatening further east in the country. The polar circle city of Norilsk has been buried under 10 feet of snow – entire apartment blocks, markets, stores and offices were buried under snow overnight.
