CENTRALIA THE DRAMA

Before proceeding.

I AM FROM CENTRALIA, PA. I was one of ‘those’ folks.. my parents moved away as we were in one of the hardest hit part of town due to the mine fire.. But the water is clean. The smoke has cleared.. there are lots of tourists desperate for a view of fire that they will never see.. and graffiti highway is amazing. Now on to the news..

For better or worse, CENRTALIA is going to get some major TEE VEE time coming up very soon.

According to DEADLINE, NBC just won the rights to produce ‘CENTRALIA,’ a project being called a ‘dark’ drama..

MORE FROM THE DEADLINE REPORT that broke today:

In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, Centralia, a genre drama from Star-Crossed creator/executive producerMeredith Averill and Amblin TV, has landed at NBC with a major penalty and has been laid off at Universal TV.

MORE//

Written by Averill, Centralia is a dark character-driven genre soap based on a real town in central Pennsylvania where an underground mine fire has been burning for over 50 years. The remaining few residents of this ghost town are determined to preserve their homes but remain unaware of the evil that is slowly making its way to the surface. Averill is executive producing with Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey

And finally..

Averill has first-hand knowledge of the Centralia story as she grew up in the nearby town of Pottsville, PA. She is coming off an overall deal at CBS TV Studios where, in addition to creating and executive producing alien-themed love story Star-Crossed for the CW, she also worked as co-executive producer on the studio’s CW dramedy Jane The Virgin and producer on CBS’ The Good Wife. She is repped by WME.

I have very, very mixed feelings about this project.. I applaud the idea. It is natural–a ghost town, especially one with the history that Centralia has, is an amazing story. But it is also complex.. I would expect Averill to create a story with respect and beauty–something Centralia had and still does.. But it’s also a situation ripe for attention, entertainment, and profit.

This upcoming project is both exciting and frightening.

After all.. this is my hometown, by default. I know the real story of it. It’s not filled with ‘ghosts’ but instead wonderful memories of times long ago. And I hope that is brought forward in the setting of the series.

Centralia is worth attention.
In the best ways possible.

THE NIGHTMARE worth a watch .. maybe not before bed

NIGHTMAREASCHERREVFEATIn April of this year the HORROR REPORT profiled the NIGHTMARE, a documentary film from Rodney Ascher (from ROOM 237).. It's a series of stories told by people who Ascher collected to tell their tales of sleep paralysis. Along with the verbiage, horrific images of what they saw--documentary style..

The creation is amazing. It's a documentary but can easily as one of the best horror movies of the year..The hat man. The shadow people.. the beds shaking and the constant state of fear that someone is in when they are sleeping but yet awake, terrified and not able to move.

This documentary can be viewed on NETFLIX right now, and it's worth your time.. I recommend it, along with a dark room and a cup of your favorite beverage..

I have a story for your as well.. a personal one and one from a friend.

A friend of mine had a night issue of paralysis a few months ago.. He told me about it twice now, most recently just now as I write this post.  He was unable to move, but he did not see the shadow man or the hat man. Instead he was awake but could not open his eyes.. or move at all. Just was still, stuck in a night mare.

And me..

Yes .. me

I had my own strange occurence about seven months ago.

I fell asleep early the night I had my issue.. but then woke up only an hour or so afterwards.. when I did, my eyes opened and I was awake. I think. But what I remember more than anything else was the movement of the bed--I felt like there was an earthquake, like the bed was rapidly shaking and violently moving me up and down. But all the while I was unable to move.

Luckily for me the hat man and shadow man and creatures of the closet did not appear. And I hope they never do.

THE NIGHTMARE on Netflix is important. Not only does it offer up entertainment and horror, but it also gives right to an important question: Just what are these night issues when they happen? Why do they happen? And what are they conjuring up? Imagination.. or reality.. One that no one, yet at least, understands.

THE NIGHTMARE gives no answers. But leads to a number of questions that may haunt you before you lay yourself down to sleep and pray the lord your soul to keep..

Murdered woman found hanging from fence mistaken for Halloween decoration

This is horrid.. RT reports,

Construction workers in Ohio were shocked to discover that the figure of a woman hanging from a fence was not a Halloween decoration, as initially thought, but a real dead body.
Ohio police told reporters the body was discovered at 8:30am on Tuesday in Chillicote, according to the state’s local outlet WKRC. The shock value was all the greater because it’s Halloween time, when people engage in pranks and make-believe. But this was anything but that.

FAKEBOOK USERS: Many admit making lives seem more exciting on socials

MORE FROM THE REPORT,

A survey by smartphone maker HTC found that more than three quarters of those asked (76%) said they judged their peers based on what they saw on their Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook profiles.

In order to make our own pages and lives appear more exciting, 6% also said they had borrowed items to include in the images in order to pass them off as their own and make others jealous.

More than half of those surveyed said they posted images of items and places purely to cause jealousy among friends and family.

Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings said the trend was unsurprising given the rise of social media.

I think we have seen our friends, family, and maybe if you look in the mirror hard enough, yourself as well do this very thing..

Try you best to make things seem fine.. Seem okay..
But all the while, the darkness of sad and fear creep in. You don’t want to express the real you on FACEBOOK though.. people may not ‘like’ ..

Seriously..

I heard about a study the other day concluding–YES, CONCLUDING the talking head on the news said–that people who drink their coffee black are more likely to be psychopaths..

I like my coffee with cream but on occasion have consumed it black.
I suppose those days, more than others, I was likely to have psychopathic tendencies that would not rear their heads when I drank with cream?

Anyway..
I found the “news” article about this scientific research.

Then I actually read the research paper itself.

Get this, if you like radishes and celery, along with black coffee, than you are most likely a psychopath!

From the abstract:

Two US American community samples (total N = 953; mean age = 35.65
35 years; 48% females) self-reported their taste preferences using two complementary preference
36 measures and answered a number of personality questionnaires assessing Machiavellianism,
37 psychopathy, narcissism, everyday sadism, trait aggression, and the Big Five factors of
38 personality.

The study goes on 45 more pages.

And lots of people are suddenly FREAKED, especially those who either drink their coffee black or are dating or married to someone who does. What secrets.. what scary plot twists await us..

Beca Grim wrote this in BUSTLE in August:

As you’ve probably guessed by now, I clearly drink only black coffee myself, as I believe all quality humans should. And if you think that’s a bit of a strong statement, consider this: There are a number of proven benefits to taking your coffee black — the way the gods intended it to be.

She goes on to say that people who drink their coffee black are more efficient at their time, in better health, thrifty, have wisdom, and don’t take part in useless social rituals.

Is Beca Grim a psychopath?
Am I one 50% of the time when I grind my beans black?

Using a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), researchers safely shut down certain groups of neurones in the brains of volunteers.

TMS, which is used to treat depression, involves placing a large electromagnetic coil against the scalp which creates electric currents that stimulate nerve cells in the region of the brain involved in mood control.

Researchers found the technique radically altered religious perceptions and prejudice.

Belief in God was reduced almost by a third, while participants became 28.5 per cent less bothered by immigration numbers.

I think when everyone first goes vegan they screw up a few times for sure during the transition period. The time that I messed up were when I was drinking alcohol, which led me to quit drinking altogether but my advice would be look up how much methyl mercury and other toxic crap there is in fish and you won’t ever want to eat it again.

How's this for a headline from a reputable mainstream source of science information: "Has Kepler Discovered an Alien Megastructure? "

All of this from DISCOVERY:

A star, named KIC 8462852, has been found with a highly curious transit signal. In a paper submitted to the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, astronomers, including citizen scientists from the Planet Hunters crowdsourcing program, report: “Over the duration of the Kepler mission, KIC 8462852 was observed to undergo irregularly shaped, aperiodic dips in flux down to below the 20 percent level.”

The research paper is thorough, describing the phenomenon, pointing out that this star is unique - we’ve seen nothing like it. Kepler has collected data on this star steadily for four years. It’s not instrumental error. Kepler isn’t seeing things; the signal is real.

“We’d never seen anything like this star,” Tabetha Boyajian, a postdoctorate researcher at Yale University and lead author, told The Atlantic. “It was really weird. We thought it might be bad data or movement on the spacecraft, but everything checked out.”

‘Alien megastructure’ sounds like a headline purely meant to stir up interest.. And I am interested.

ONE NIGHT ON GROUND ZERO

Clyde Lewis gave attention to the video game SAD SATAN--and presumablly made it more popular than it was prior.

Last night he gave the same type of attention to another game that has been around for some time: FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S..

The show was a must listen, not only if you are interested in the latest array of pop culture items that comes with games of this nature, but also if you have kids.. Lewis even interviewed his girlfriend's 9-year-old son about his emotional reaction to playing the demo version of the game.. Fright, to sum it up.

It is because of being a watcher of horror and a father as well that I was aware of this game.

In April of this year, entertainment sites reported that it was going to be made into a feature length film. And being familiar with the subject matter and imagery of animitronic demons, I have been doing my YouTube watching 4-year-old a parental and moral favor and keeping an eye on what he views...

The game is set in a pizza parlor that has a lot of reminders of CHUCK E CHEESE. The big difference  is at night the happy animals come alive, attempt to kill you.. you are a security guard that has to survive 5 nights. You discover children have been killed there.. you get scared.. and you are greeted with an array of images that hit you and your subconcious alike..

While  I never played it, I viewed gameplay on Youtube and decided, at that time, to attempt by best skills in shielding my innocent son from it.

But that is difficult in the modern age.

Clyde Lewis correctly pointed out last night that many of the players of the game are kids--not teenagers, but elementary students.

It's notable and interesting that the maker of the game, Scott Cawthon, is a Christian who devoted much of life to using media to spread the word of his beliefs..

Recently he took to the web to defend himself..

Among his words:
Did you know that last year I was working at Dollar General? I worked as a cashier. I had three bosses who were all still in high school. Before that I worked at Target in the backroom freezer, unloading frozen foods. I haven’t had a successful life; and now that God has blessed me with some success, I’m doing my best to be responsible with that success. I don’t party on weekends, I don’t get drunk or sip martinis. I spend my evenings playing Megaman 3, buster only, with my kids. And I try to good with what's been given to me.

The increased attention on the game from Grouhd Zero last night will only move it further up in the popculure sphere..

Adding to the mix: the amount of horror fans and gamers who call this one of the most effective and frightening games to have come out in some time. That is evidenced by Hollywood plans to make a film about it..

I am not a moral crusader who wants games like this banned or panned. But being a parent is the most important job a parent has.. Watchin to ensure yourminor's eyes are not seeing something before they should is a part of that role..

As a child I saw horror and grew to love the genre. It is only as I get older that I have grown to really dislike it most of the ti.e

But that is because the ideas are vacant plots and stories, and real scares.

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S seems different. This game, and eventual movie, appears likely to hit deep in your core, you mind, and your existence..

The rise of Satan in the UK? Or the Satanic Panic comeback?

History repeats itself. Is it now?
This article appearing in RUSSIA TODAY and quoted throughout the world reminds me of the Satanic Panic of the 1980s.. Headline: WITCHCRAFT AND EXORCISM ABUSE RISING IN THE UK..

They attribute their findings to the police.

The source of information is a watchdog group called Project Violet, a group of Metropolitan Police attempting to stop faith-based abuse..

RT writes,

The UK is experiencing an alarming rise in children suffering from accusations of witchcraft and exorcism, which are being reported to the police. A watchdog says there has been “a significant increase” with 60 cases reported so far in 2015.

One incident saw a young boy’s parents throwing him out of their home because they believed he was a “devil child,” while another child had his face bitten by his mother, who believed he was a “witch possessed by evil spirits.”

The claims were made by Project Violet, which is trying to stop faith-based abuse. The operation is being run by London’s Metropolitan Police. They say that 60 cases have already been recorded so far this year and is part of a worrying trend, which has seen a rapid rise in the number of cases that have been reported.

And this..
Another high-profile case of abuse linked to religious ritual involved the murder of Kristy Bamu, who was savagely beaten by his sister’s partner, Eric Bikubi, in 2010. Bamu, who was 15 at the time, was accused by Bikubi of being possessed by“evil spirits,” and subsequently hit with hammers, floor tiles and broken glass, before being drowned in a bathtub.

And finally,
The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) urged Britain to do more to stop this brutal form of people trafficking.

Let me say this, first: People who believe in the paranormal or strange will get a fair shake from the HORROR REPORT. We wonder and ponder the same subject matter as well.. we don't judge because, as said many times over, the paranormal seems unlikely until it happens to you.

But we also like to deal with facts.

So do the facts back up the hype over exorcisms and satanic ritual abuse? Do the numbers tell the same story that media attention creates?

Here is a good story about the Satanic Panic of the 80s.

We need to be watchful that we aren't falling victim to over-hyped numbers that add up to less than  a drop in the bucket.

All the while recognize the moments and actual events that need attention. In the 80s, the hype was overdone. But the media ignored the Franklin Credit Union cover up.

Now? In the UK? are the numbers overdone to ignore the Royal Family sex abuse allegations?

Just when you thought it was Armageddon, someone comes around and ruins it for you

Call them the anti Debbie Downers.. a group has released findings that they say conclusively shows natural disasters are at a 10-year-low.

But South Carolina flooding?
But California drought?
But..

But ...

The executive summary from AON said that 2014 was a below average year for catastrophe..

That doesn't mean awful stuff did not happen, but on a pure number, it was less than other years when compared..

When United States citizens armed with Bibles proclaim that the end times are near because of US disasters, it's interesting to look at the most high profile and expensive 2014 events: The US only made two of the ten, with May storms and a yearlong drought being the costliest..

Another fact the report points out on page 10: The population of the world is soaring.. and with it, a migration of people to locations that see natural disasters on a more regular basis. Or at least bad weather..

Get this: 44% of the world's citizens (that's a lot, 3.2 billion) live within 95 miles of a coastline. That's more than the entire population of the world in 1950.

I noticed something that happened when this report was issued. Numerous anti-global warming sites like Climate Depot and others began linking news about this report and focused squarely on the ten-year-low 2014 saw, disaster wise. But there's more news they should have paid attention to--important facts that they chose to ignore because, as usual, people see headlines and neglect to read actual reports. Imagine! the information age! and we only read headlines..

Page 12 of the report details that 2014 was a continuation of the trend of much above normal global temperatures .. As a matter of fact, 2014 was the warmest year on record!

The rest of the report is a good read.

The old fashioned me actually printed it out and will study it through. IT was prepared a bit ago, but as said before, other anti-global warming sites alerted me to it by only writing up quick posts about  it now.

The devil is always in the details.

So while Armageddon may look a bit off because of the lower than average disasters, it's hard to imagine further problems aren't in the future when you see warming like we are and the endless barrage of temperature increases--coupled with 3.2 billion people within 95 miles of a coastline that may vanish eventually..

Abandoned places.. strange images of cars never purchased

I have posted a number of things on the HORROR REPORT about Seph Lawless over the past few years--I love his work..

Tonight I came across another link, photos NOT taken by the famed abandoned places photographer, but they very well could have..

A warning, the site linked is your typical Facebook clickporn--links and ads will pop up, so click at your own risk. But it's pictures of car dealerships frozen in time, with cars often still in them:

https://c3.staticflickr.com/3/2569/4081875176_9d4da23db5_b.jpg

As said, you'll have to maneuver through your normal "next" style setup with ads making Gleems some pennies on the dollar. But a quick glance through is worth it if you're into things like this.

As I am.

A BEAUTIFUL OCTOBER WEEKEND IN TIME, 2015

pumpkin

May your day be filled with pumpkins and joy.

Sunshine and warmth..

It's the season of the witch. Life can be a bitch.
So sit back and enjoy the show.
October is the best month of the year. Single handedly the best month of the year.
So get out.

And enjoy the show.

My family and I enjoyed a few shows this weekend, a covered bridge festival at the greatest park in the world, Knoebels, and a fall foliage festival in one of the best towns in the world, Jim Thorpe..

Enjoyed it. My wife and son did as well.
It was a great moment in time, coupled with sunny skies and fire-colored leaves.

I wish moments like these could last forever.. stay forever.. never go and never whither..

But whither they will. As will the leaves.
Cold winds will blow.

Until they do, I am going to enjoy each and every moment I can.

MARTIAN dominated the Columbus Day weekend with big dollars..

PAN had some of the most annoying ads and trailers in cinematic history..

Critics pounced on it for using tired cliches.. People who saw it went on social media to say how much they hated it..

And with that, PAN made only s slight percentage of its $250 mil budget..

TACKY HALLOWEEN DECOR CREATES GLOBAL STIR

Some people have inflatable monsters that annoy neighbors for seasonal decor.. others showcase brutal scenes of torture and death and get worldwide news attention. Such is the case at two venues in the United States, one in Ohio and one in New Jersey. Both have attracted worldwide media, a UK DAILY MAIL pictorial, and days worth of attention on the Drudge Report.

The front yard of a house in Butler New Jersey features an 'anti-ISIS' Halloween theme. Complete with blood, gore, images of torture, and the President with a bloody machete.. From the DAILY MAIL report,

A family in New Jersey have upset some in the community of Butler for decorating their home with what they say is an 'anti-ISIS' theme, using a hanging mannequin representing a United States soldier and a terrorist standing nearby wearing a mask of President Obama and brandishing a machete.

Behind the scene is a depiction of Jordanian pilot, Lt. Muath al-Kasaesbeh in a cage. He was horrifically burned alive by ISIS after being captured following the shooting down of his jet fighter earlier this year.

And yes there are pictures:

Too much?: This front yard in Butler, New Jersey, is using Halloween to take a stand against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and it's upsetting the community

The most intense part of the gruesome display is what appears to be a US soldier, wrapped in an American flag, hanging from the front tree with a plastic bag around the head

Not to be outdone!!
In comes Ohio with more dramatic blood.

Again from the DAILY MAIL:

A front yard in Ohio is upsetting just as many for the gruesome fake corpses strewn all over.

Even though Halloween is more than three weeks away, the yard - in Parma - already contains a cocooned corpse hanging from a tree, a body impaled on a stake and a cadaver upside down on a cross.

Undoubtedly Halloween is the time for scares and horror... other worldly ambitions, too.
But tacky, tacky tacky is the only way to describe the scenes of macabre murder in front yards.

Gone too far?
Or just art being art. Freedom of expression indeed. But should you self-regulate your senses before dropping scenery like this?

There's stories like this every year.
And every town has one of "those neighbors."

Oregon shooting detailed by 'lucky' student

The ASSOCIATED PRESS reports,
The 18-year-old college student singled out by the shooter as the "lucky one" to survive and deliver a package to law enforcement has told his story for the first time about the massacre in Roseburg, Ore.

In a written statement that was the most detailed account thus far of the Oct. 1 shooting, Mathew Downing said Friday that when Christopher Harper-Mercer entered the Umpqua Community College classroom, Downing's ears were ringing from shots already fired, and he thought what was happening "couldn't be real."

MORE//
He said the first thing the shooter did was put his backpack on the front desk and pull out an envelope, saying: "There is a flash drive in this and whoever survives this should give it to the police."

Downing's account of what came next coincides with relatives of survivors who previously reported that Harper-Mercer looked at Downing and said, "Hey, kid with the glasses, you are the lucky one. I will not shoot you if you give this to the cops."

Downing said he stood up then, and the shooter pointed a gun at him. "This is the moment I thought I was going to die," Downing said.

Instead, the shooter paused for a moment, Downing said, and handed him the envelope. Next, the shooter told Downing to sit in the very back seat and face him.

Downing did so and said at that point Harper-Mercer fired into the center of the room and began asking students one by one if they were religious. The shooter fired at one student who said he was Christian and another who said she was Catholic.

The report goes on,
The shooter reloaded two handguns with ammunition from his backpack during the killings, Downing said. Harper-Mercer was "firing on people who were just lying there," Downing said.

Downing also said the shooter seemed to lose interest when a woman told him she couldn't move her legs to stand up because of the pain.

He turned to another woman, telling her to stand, and she picked up a desk to defend herself, Downing said. Harper-Mercer fired at her anyway, hitting her in the leg.

When the shooter noticed police, he leaned out a window and fired at them. Downing also wrote that after Harper-Mercer was hit by police gunfire, he lay down on the floor and shot himself in the head.

MONSANTO job slash: GMO vault drying

The AP wire reports,
Monsanto Co. said last week it will eliminate 2,600 jobs as part of a cost-saving plan designed to deal with falling sales of its biotech seeds and herbicides, which pushed its quarterly losses deeper into the red.

The job cuts will reduce the company's 22,500-employee workforce of by about 12 percent over the next two years.

That news was greeted with mixed reaction in media, but stocks sunk lower on the news before American markets closed last week.

According to analysts, the stock price for Monsanto has dropped 25% since the spring growing season.

Negative reviews. People who studied Vietnam's history and chemical warfare makers.. And a sudden burst of anti-GMO into the marketplace have created the perfect storm. Not to mention other countries where farmers are angrily voting against Monsanto products.

Pesticides too..

Is Monsanto Roundup-ready?

The house of pop culture insanity is being blown wide open by none other than advanced star Bette Midler.. Her words have come on the heels of a strange tweet that Justin Bieber's father--for some reason--decided to post about his own son's penis picture flap, not fap, that took place this week..

Background first: Beeb's DAD, presumably now infected with the fever, Tweeted,
""@justinbieber what do you feed that thing,  #proud daddy" ..

As sickening as it is..he did it.  Afterwards, even gossip rags shuttered in a collective grossed out sigh.

Enter Bette:
@justinbieber dad tweeted he's proud of his son's penis size. I think the biggest dick in this situation is the dad who abandoned his son."

Ouch.
So sayseth the Midler, so she becomes the hero.

And the wind beneath's Justin's genitalia ..

'Horror' with a realistic twist: The villain is something that hurts us all

I read a headline this morning with some interest.. CNN put a story about a new 'horror' movie, with horror in quotes, on their main page. The entire article was political in nature, though.. the meat of the subject, a few paragraphs in, got to the movie they were speaking of.. FROM CNN:

For a primer on what this looks like on the ground, politicians should see the powerful new film, "99 Homes", directed by Ramin Bahrani. The film, which stars Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon, Laura Dern and Noah Lomax, follows the traumatic experience of a family when the bank forecloses on their modest house. Dennis Nash (played by Garfield) is a construction worker and single father who is having trouble finding a job and unable to make mortgage payments.

No sooner does the bank foreclose than a ruthless real estate broker named Rick appears at the door to inform Dennis' family that they need to get out. Dennis, his widowed mother (Dern) and son leave their home, and all their possessions are thrown on the curb like trash. It happens that quickly. In this film, the monster in this horror is the economy itself. "I didn't kick you out, the bank did," Rick explains.

The movie winds through the maelstrom that results from the foreclosure. The father ends up going to work for Rick, making a deal with the devil. "America does not bail out the losers," Rick explains. The story gets darker as Dennis, desperate for money, finds himself in league with the businessman who ruthlessly uprooted his family.

99-Homes-new-posterNo blood, no gore. No monsters on Maple Street. Instead the villain that haunts us to our core: The economy. The chance that our lives, if calm today, won't be tomorrow.. that jobs will dry up and robots will take whatever services are left to perform.

This is the modern day horror that few want to talk about it.. Julian Zelizer makes an amazing point by using the movie description in the light of a horror flick.

In the end, it really is, in a way.

detail.bd67b6fc

There was a certain genius in the film IT FOLLOWS that somewhat correlates to 99 HOMES.  The most amazing pieces of cinematography in that film were images of Detroit, broken and barren, coupled with the haunting music that played loudly in the background. What was following? Sure, a monster who is exchanged with sex. But what could have been following the youths easily was a troubled economic future where they would be jobless and soulless.

Now.. to make it into a "REAL" horror, 99 HOMES would need Eli Roth. Picture a bank foreclosure and when the show up to put a sign on the door, they are zombies. Unless they really already are...?
