The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

A folk song by Gordon Lightfoot dramatized in words and music the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior.. This is the anniversary weekend of the disaster..

The haunting words of the Lightfoot song captured the emotion of the tragic event..

On November 10, 1975, Lake Superior was hit with a storm that created ocean-like waves in the water body.  The Edmund Fitzgerald was traveling in the storm when the captain suddenly had difficulty with taking too much water.  The people who died on the ship were crew of the ship, along with a Maritime Academy cadet..  The youngest was 21, the oldest was 63.. You can find more on the ship and the sinking here..

Lightfoot considers his song about the disaster his finest work.
The HORROR REPORT agrees..

A disturbing CNN news alert from the Philippines

This is just the beginning of what will be a horrific death toll in the wake of Superstorm Haiyan.. CNN reports this late tonight:
More than 100 people were killed in a Philippine city that took the brunt of Super Typhoon Haiyan, authorities said.

That death toll in Tacloban was the first significant casualty report in a day when authorities began surveying the devastation of a typhoon described as perhaps the strongest storm to make landfall in recorded history, with 195 mph winds and gusts of 235 mph.

Even more, there are reportedly more than just these hundreds bodies on the streets of Tacloban..

Other areas just off due to power failures will most likely have the same grim results..

The Philippine Coast Guard says 3,398 people stranded sea on multiple watercraft--another part will be harrowing rescues, often with success, and failure..

THOR set to rule box office this weekend

Here are the theater counts for this weekend's box office..

THOR: THE DARK WORLD, 3841 THEATERS..
LAST VEGAS adds 17 more ..
ABOUT TIME adds another 1025..
12 YEARS A SLAVE up 734 more..

FREE BIRDS AND ENDERS GAMES stays the same..

Competition is rough.. but with THOR being released on almost 4,000 screens--and being the only film with a wide release this week, it's a shoe-in for victory in the money game..

Reviews for THOR have been less than superb, though, with CNN saying it's far from being a great superhero movie, WIRED pointing out some imperfections,  and the ATLANTIC says it has lightweight charm..

But even with all that , THOR raked in $7.1 mil with early showings Thursday night, according to DISNEY..
The question really is: Does it have staying power to last two weeks?

Art Bell issues a statement regarding the deafening silence coming from Sirius XM on his demands

This website has been following the exit of Art Bell from Dark Matter for days, and his latest post tonight on BELLGAB.com does not show much promise for those hoping he will return to the airwaves under his conditions

.. He writes in full
Ok today again we heard nothing from Sirius. It is strange that we get no communication at all.

Just so you know, not any of this was done on the fly, before leaving on Monday I consulted with Paul
and Bob Crane my sponsor and they both agreed it was the right course of action.

On Wed we proposed becoming a Independent Broadcaster, which as with others at Sirius/XM would
have meant we could stream ourself, that was the goal. They said they were activley considering it and
we have not heard from them since. I told them I was willing to be on air the next day.

I wish I had more to report but for now that is it as of the close of business Friday on the East Coast.

Hell unleashed by Haiyan

The storm is over in the Philippines, but now the real work begins: Attempting to restore power, find the dead, and help the injured..

Typhoon Haiyan was the most powerful storm, apparently, ever to strike land--and it's not done yet, as it now moves again into water and gets poised to strike Vietnam..

According to reports from the Philippine islands at this hour, Haiyan made both Katrina and Sandy from the Americas look weak.. Power has been cut to much of the island nation, with some reported injuries and deaths already..

At this point, some of the hardest hit areas have not yet been visited by disaster recovery personnel--a terrible thought knowing that some of the areas where many lived received up to ten feet of flooding..

And with the storm yet not being over (other nations need to prepare) millions are going to be affected by the typhoon..

And while the record books may have changed with this monster storm, it's also worth remember that its wrath has not been completely felt yet.. It's on to the rest of Asia...

Freaky Friday: All the news and not a drop to drink

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 8 2013

It has been a long and winding week.. winding down now ..
Fridays come so sudden, though.. It seems that the weekly process of wishing away Monday makes life quickly slip into a fast-motion experience, with the bad flying by but the good also vanishing just as much..
And before you know it? Thanksgiving will have come and gone.. Christmas, too.. It's all so rushed. So fast. So scary.
And with that, it's on to the scary news of the day, the moment, the hour.. all unfit to print, and presented in HTML, beamed across the landscape via an internet connection, and landing onto your computer screen, or handheld device, with rapid fire motion.. Read the headlines and weep.

The HORROR REPORT and other media sources have been focusing a great deal on Typhoon Haiyan. This monster killer has now struck the Philippine islands--it may get stronger and deal a blow to China or Vietnam. But in the mean time, it's impressive to look at some information about how bad the storm was. At one point, Haiyan had gusts as strong as 235 mph! There are power failures and so far three deaths--that number is sadly going to rise, if predictions are true.

For that, and other things, the buck has stopped. And Obama said sorry.

It's about time: The FDA is banning trans fats.. Now can they look again at aspartame and perhaps HFCS, or will that take five more decades, too?
Speaking of food, it's not all bad. As a matter of fact, there are some that refresh the body--and mind..

Like we didn't know.. TEPCO now admits that Fukushima radiation is about 95% higher than reported.. Thanks for the honesty, TEPCO.
Things are also going to get a little more dicey as the fuel rod replacement project is about to begin.. And get this: A big quake at Fukushima could force the American west coast to evacuate! That is quite a fearful talking point.. Whether there will be any concrete answers or not, Saturday night's COAST TO COAST AM with John B Wells may be worth a listen.. It's a roundtable relating to Fukushima.. I guess that coverage is better than no coverage--and no coverage is exactly what has been happening in the United States media..

The Virgin Galactic billionaire will have a live performance on TV.. Will it be like the spacewalk in 1969? ....did we really even go to the moon? Let's no go there.

A winter storm targeting NEW YORK CITY developing for next week. Models are models. I say it's too soon to tell..

The latest in the Bieber fever world.. Justin had sex with a girl in Brazil, and she snapped his photo to prove it. Apparently he likes to snuggle with his red hate instead of his mate. Just remember, all the world's a stage. And don't be Bieber's pawn--I say this whole photo and story was a set up only to add to the image that Justin Bieber wants people to have .. he's a star, baby. Don't belieber any of it.

CHRISTMAS 2015 PRESENT: Star Wars: Episode VII finally has an official release date: December 18, 2015..

Ten of the most unconventional horror movie monsters.. And speaking of horror movie monsters that aren't decorated with gore and face paint, one of my favorite villains ever in a horror flick was the old man from the movie THE CHANGELING. That movie was sad, scary, and disturbing.. It's worth a watch if you've never seen it.

Haiyan destroys

There are some late breaking dispatches coming from the Philippine islands concerning the massive super typhoon Haiyan..

Unfortunately, not much concrete information will be known for several more hours--the extent of the loss of communications is very severe with this impressive storm..Media reports and experts have warned to be prepared to a dramatic loss of life, upwards of the thousands.. Grim numbers are sure to come out, but that is after the storm passes and a full accounting can be taken of just how bad Haiyan was..

We do have some information coming through the wire services late tonight, however; those reports may shine some light onto the human struggles taking place as you read this..

REUTERS is reporting that  millions have attempted to flee the storm.. the storm was carving a path through popular holiday destinations for tourists..  When the storm made landfall, we are told, it carried with it 195 mph winds--Jeff Masters from WEATHER UNDERGROUND said this wind speed during landfall will put Haiyan in the history books as the strongest ever storm to strike land..

REUTERS dispatches also report  power outages and calls for help.

And this ominous note is also worth repeating: When the storm leaves the Philippine islands, it will once again enter water .. it could also become even stronger as it nears China or Vietnam..

NPR also has a late update this evening concerning Haiyan, including information that the storm is 'off the charts'.

The world is watching history.. and for those living through it, the HORROR REPORT can only ask you, the readers, to hope, pray, and send whatever positive thoughts towards them that you can.. This is a dramatically horrendous situation.. Most certainly, as the hours pass, more people are perishing from the winds, rains, and disastrous path Haiyan is taking.. My God have mercy on their souls..

This was Haiyan just before landfall.. with its evil eye nearing humanity..

ART BELL: "As of yet no word"

The talk show host, who has left his program DARK MATTER only to request Sirius allow him to offer a free stream from ARTBELL.COM, says he did not yet hear back from the satellite company with an answer..

His comments were on BELLGAB.COM tonight..
Bell's statement in full is as follows:
Good evening everybody,
I wish I had some news but I have nothing to report. We have had no communication at all fromanybody at Sirius/XM. It was Monday I went off and on Wed we proposed that we act as a Independent Broadcaster as many other Host's do on Sirius/XM which simply means we get nopay and are then able to stream or even be on Broadcast stations at the same time. However wesaid we would be exclusivly on Sirius/XM and only stream. They said they would activly consider theproposal and they may well, be but as of yet no word. It is a shame because it woulkd have been abig hit in my opinion. I will keep you informed of any change.

Still a developing story..
Still a mystery as to how it will end.

ART BELL IN TALKS WITH SIRIUS RADIO TO BECOME 'INDEPENDENT BROADCASTER'

Art Bell, who after just six weeks of DARK MATTER, abruptly quit, announced late night that he is in talks with Sirius XM to once again return to the airwaves..

According to Bell's post on the (WHAT ELSE CAN I SAY) famed BELLGAB.COM, the talk show host desires to become an 'independent broadcaster' with Sirius as the vehicle.

This is Bell's statement in full regarding the latest developments:
I almost hate to see this thread wind down, in life you almost never get to see such unmitigated hateaccross your screen. Long ago because of fast blast I learned to ignore it. When you do a show and have aguest people think they hate you will see "dump this ass hole and go to open lines" and a lot more just like it and much worse, in the end you have to do what you think is right and act on it. For the most partby the end of the show you are getting messages like"best show I've ever heard". Once in a while youdo have to "dump the asshole" but if you follow the advice of a mob it almost always goes wrong.
This board is a lot like that. decisions that we are forced to make or make because we think they are the right thing to do are just that, and if they turn out well your a genius, if not your dead to the World or at leastsome posters on this board, but it is always fun to watch.
We are currently in talks with Sirius/XM which really knows how to deliver to vehicals very well. The idea is tobecome Independent Broadcasters which means no pay from Sirius while still keeping it exclusivly Sirius/XM inthe Broadcast World, however we would then be free to stream free at artbell.com. Another words the best ofboth Worlds. In the long run I think it would benefit all including Sirius/XM. I think this will work but if not we willstream the show at the first opportunity, either way it will happen if I have to finance it myself, I will.
I know all this seemed very sudden to most of you but there was much going on behind the scenes you do notknow about and because it was said to me in confidence I am not free to discuss publicly, however I feel this isthe right decision. If I am wrong I am sure I will be dead to the World and some who post here.
I want the show to work at least as much as all of you but I have been at this for a while and I know what it takes to be viable and when I say that I mean not just as a niche type show, viable Worldwide. I understand that some of you are sooooo angry that you will not listen to the free steam and I will just have to find a way to live with that.
                                                                                                                             Rage on,
                                                                                                                             Art

So the development twist and turn of Art Bell and his DARK MATTER seems to be taking yet another unexpected turn..

This story has changed several times over the past 72 hours, as noted on the HORROR REPORT and other websites that are covering the matter.

The amazing part of Art Bell's venture is that it would be a complete overhaul to Sirius XM's current business model. A free stream, and a host not being paid, but yet something with Sirius technology backing up the entire affair, is a cutting edge take on satellite radio.

Bell promises nothing, but simply says negotiations are happening.

Throughout the night tonight, ARTBELL.COM webmaster Keith Rowland has been testing a stream to see if users were able to get the audio to work--it seems to have been favorable during the test period.. Rowland appears to be using an ICECAST server, and the stats are available here on peak listening.

It's worth noting that several people who tried quitting Sirius were given a free extra month, 'just in case' there were changes with DARK MATTER--and maybe those changes are now becoming known.

The HORROR REPORT will attempt to cover all the information concerning this story..

Stay tuned.

BLOCK-BUSTED

Blockbuster is going to be a faded memory of a generation past.. very soon.
This coming January, the store plans on closing its remaining 300 retail operations still existent. And it doesn't stop there..

The video rental company that will soon be gone also said that by mid-December, its mail-in program will also end.
Watch em while you got em?
Be kind and rewind?

A few years ago, HOLLYWOOD VIDEO was met with the same fate..
Blockbuster attempted to reinvent itself and fashion a store more suitable for the 21st century--less personnel costs, less actual locations, and more rental kiosks and mailings..
It failed.

This is what USA TODAY reports in its latest dispatches on the end of Blockbuster:
Dish said it will retain licensing rights to the Blockbuster brand and its vast video library.
Dish said it will focus on expanding its Blockbuster @Home business, a streaming service available to Dish pay-TV customers. Blockbuster On Demand, the company's streaming service for the general public, will also continue to operate.
Dish Network bought Blockbuster in April, 2011 in an auction for $320 million as Blockbuster was emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Dish's plan at the time was to leverage its more than 1,700 store locations to offer in-store rentals that would complement Dish's other video offerings. "Cross-marketing and service-extension opportunities" – possibly in-store promotions for Dish's packages - were also mentioned by Dish at the time of the acquisition.
So that's that.
The end of an era.

Sure, streaming is king right now and those one day kiosks aren't doing so bad.. But one day, someone will wonder, 'whatever happened to the video rental store?' No more late night pajama-clad car rides to buy the latest horror movie.. no more asking a worker 'how was this movie?' ...no more "can I help you find a film." It's all on you. You're the consumer. Now get to work.

Video killed the radio star.
And time killed the video store.

Goodbye Blockbuster.
We will miss you.

Now where will Elaine find her movies!?
