Tom Cruise’s latest movie, Universal’s The Mummy is tanking stateside this weekend in second place with an estimated $30.9M behind Warner Bros/DC’s Wonder Woman which will own the top spot for a second weekend in a row with $54.3M, -47% and a running cumulative of $202.1M by Sunday.

The movie has not been received well, either--by critics or regular viewers.. THE MUMMY is currently being hit with an 18% rotten rate on ROTTEN TOMATOES..

True horrors in the heartland

Forget scary movies, there is something much worse taking place in reality: Drug deaths in the United States are so quickly escalating in number, that coroners are even running out of room for body storage as they are found.. (that is in Western Pennsylvania.. )

From sea to shining sea the opioid crisis is becoming more than a crisis: It is now a way of life.

I read this story with true horror Americans under the age of 50 are dying due to overdoses in record numbers. So big, as a matter of fact, that drug deaths ARE NOW THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH of the under 50 demographic..

59,000 deaths in the United States in 2016. A record year--and a 19% increase in the category when compared to 2015..

The heroin epidemic has turned into a fentanyl problem.. Meth included.. the other stuff pales in comparison.

Addiction is real.. And there are LOTS of factors that are inclusive in these numbers. It is beyond a 'blame the addict' world.. Especially when gateway drugs are so often prescribed.

Yes indeed.. the United States of death. The culture of drugs.. the mind-numbing and life destroying problem only gets worse.

Of course, we will continue to do as we always did: Cover it up in our minds. Watch sports. And pretend that politics matters.
All the while your neighborhood is destroyed and communities across America become towns that fear sundown...

The wrasling days are back again. At least in my house.

Ratings may be down. But in my house? ....rising again

It finally arrived! The special moment when my son and I could attend a professional wrestling match together.
The venue: Wilkes Barre.. The moment: Magical!

My soon to be 7-year-old became an immediate fan. He knew little of the matches or wrestlers prior.. but during and after became completely immersed in all that is professional wrestling.

Wrestling is one of those things that I avoided over the past several years. When I was younger it was a must watch. During my teenage years when Stone Cold was stunning Vince McMahon weekly, I had and attended RAW parties every Monday night. Always fun times.

But as you age, as you grow.. (some would say as you mature) you neglect those old battles. You look back with a nostalgic tear at the memories and fun times. Such as when I saw Ric Flair live… or when my father used to take me to the local cable company to pick up the little box to hook on the TV for the quarterly pay per view events–everything now is different.

The thing that is not different however is professional wrestling: It is almost reassuring that you can figure out who will win, who will lose.. it is amazing to watch a TV production live, to see how truly staged everything is.. The number of times stagehands en masse change the mat and draping around the ring during the televised RAW program.

My son went wild for Roman Reigns. Really wished he could have seen the Undertaker wrestle.. but was in awe when the Big Show took part in a really quick tag team match.

Professional wrestling is taking a massive ratings hit right now. I can see why.. The soap opera drama is too much, and not fun. Besides the Miz, there isn’t much humor like years gone by. There is no big star right now.

This, however, is so often what happens with wrestling. The Hulk Hogan years led to the Stone Cold years, which led to the Rock years.. Vince McMahons needs that larger than life star to drum up ratings again..

And it is cyclical.
I stopped watching.
My son will start.. and most likely me again as well, at least enough to support his newfound love of the entertainment…

I have said before and will always argue this: Horror movies and professional wrestling exemplify pop culture of the day. The types of horror people see, and the types of stars people choose in wrestling, tell a whole bunch about pop culture of the time. The moral 80s with Hulk Hogan taking vitamins and Jason Vorhees killing sexy drug addicts… the 90s with Stone Cold stunning the system and GhostFace mocking horror. The 2000s? ….chaos! turmoil! Wrestling run amuck.. SAW films killing without mercy. The newer generation of both? Horror back to the roots again. Wrestling has to do the same.
If it does my son and I will be tuning in every Monday night with popcorn in hand. And attending the next live event..

Unmasking the MASK: The horror movie that never was

I read this interesting historical tidbit today concerning the famous Jim Carrey movie THE MASK: It

was supposed to be a horror movie.

Really..

Director Chuck Russell has been looking back at the movie, and he’s revealed that New Line had a very different take on the film originally. “It’s a great example of really fighting for your vision in a film. We changed it from a horror film into a comedy. It was original conceived as being a horror film. That was a real battle. New Line wanted a new kind of Freddy movie”, he said...

I am curious if the film's face would have measured up high as a horror.. especially with Jim Carrey?

I think yes.

Though Carrey's RIDDLER was a debauchery in the BATMAN FOREVER movie, he is fully capable of serious roles, as we have seen later in his career.. One achievement on the serious note (though humor was added) was one of my favorite movies from the 20th century: THE TRUMAN SHOW.

Other comedians went serious with good results, too. Such as Robin Williams in WHAT DREAMS MAY COME and ONE HOUR PHOTO. ONE HOUR PHOTO may have one of the scariest films in general I have ever seen..

But the MASK worked as comedy. And I think --I really do--that it would have as horror too.

With the modern stint of remakes and re-imaginations, I would not be surprised if we see the MASK unmasked as a horror one day sooner or later..

ICE CUBE TO APPEAR ON 'REAL TIME'

The rapper was already scheduled to appear on the June 9 episode of HBO's "Real Talk With Bill Maher" and has no intention of backing out now.

Cecilia Wessels snapped the picture of her husband, Theunis, on Friday evening as the twister passed near their home in Three Hills.

She says cutting the grass was on her husband’s to-do list, and as he started the task, she went for a nap. Wessels says she was woken by her nine-year-old daughter who was upset that there was something like a tornado in the sky, but her father wouldn’t come inside.

Theunis Wessels says the tornado was actually much further away than it appears in the photo, and that it was moving away from them.

There have been no reports of injuries from the tornado, although some other photos show downed trees and a barn with its roof ripped off.

The situation at hand:

Militants drove a van at high speed into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing revelers on the street and in bars in the nearby Borough Market area on Saturday night in what authorities described as a terrorist attack.

Armed police rushed to the scene where shots were heard and authorities urged Londoners on Twitter to "run, hide, tell" if they were caught in the attack.

Witnesses described a van speeding into several pedestrians on London Bridge and then a knife-wielding man sprinting towards a bar packed with revellers enjoying a Saturday night out.

Italian photographer Gabriele Sciotto, who was watching the Champions League final at the Wheatsheaf pub in Borough Market, said he saw three men being shot just outside the pub.

This morning, Bill Maher is facing widespread calls that he should be fired for his joke!

Maher was talking to Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) about the senator’s book, “The Vanishing American Adult,” which explores why today’s young people are unable to survive in a competitive global economy. The conversation drifted to Halloween and how dressing up is no longer just a children’s tradition. Sasse said adults don’t do that quite as much in his state because it’s frowned upon. In response, Maher said he should visit Nebraska more.

“We’d love to have you work in the fields with us,” Sasse said.

“Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house n—–,” Maher said, raising both of his hands up. “No it’s — it’s a joke.”

At this time, there has not been a public response from Bill Maher. It will undoubtedly come.

But we did have a response from Griffin, who late in the week blamed Donald Trump and family for attempting to take her career down.

At this time, people including Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson and Jack Posobiec, a Trump supporter who writes for the right-wing site Rebel Media, have called for Maher to be fired. #FireBillMaher is circulating on Twitter.

The rest.. rest.. the rest may be history.

This has been an awful year for fake outrage over things that don't matter. Like when the Late Show host Colbert had a nasty joke about Trump.. Or when people wanted Sean Hannity fired for being political opposed to them.. or when Steve Martin had to say sorry for calling Carrie Fisher beautiful shortly after she passed away.

This is tiring.. This is getting to be a drag on freedom of speech. And unfortunately, as the whole mess of 2017 continues, this nonsensical tripe will most likely keep occurring.

Should Kathy Griffin say sorry? Sure if she wants to. Same for Bill Maher. But should they be fired? ....I suppose the private companies who employ them can only decide after reading the tea leaves.. But my God.. my God.. jokes are over. In the new age, everyone can take offense at what they choose..demand repercussions for their agony.. and then at the end of the day still demand the termination of whatever person said something to offend them.

Conservative.. Red states.

Blue state liberals.. All the same.

In the end, the middle of the roaders--all of us--have been forced into a giant mess of madness.

The video, taken by a resident from Frome, shows streaks of light over nearby Cley hill which is 2 miles from UFO town Warminster.
The footage, which lasts a few minutes, shows the peculiar light moving in circular directions in the night sky.

'I took this video from my house in Frome last night. It was over the Cley Hill area I think, which is always a hotspot for UFOs', the resident who took the video told Somerset Live.
'Probably a drone with a fancy flame effect tail or something. It's been spotted a few times locally', the resident said.

According to some early estimates, there are hopes that the newest super-heroine movie will yield dramatically high early summer box office results..

In North America, Warner Bros. is being more conservative and suggesting a $65 million to $70 million debut, considering tracking has been unreliable as of late.

But if tracking is right, Wonder Woman could land the biggest domestic opening ever for a female director, primarily because very few women have been given the chance to helm a Hollywood tentpole. It would also be a morale boost for Hollywood following the worst Memorial Day weekend in 18 years, thanks to a number of underperforming summer event pics...

After announcing several weeks ago that I didn't have enough fundage in the wallet this year to cover the hosting costs for the site with Wordpress, I was given more than a few emails from readers regretting the site leaving..

I decided to change things up a bit. Eliminate the hefty cost and, at least for one year, switch to a cheaper hosting platform and also keep the domain name--why not since it existed since the early 2000s..

So here I am.

The biggest challenge: Figuring out what to do with the content that was published on the Wordpress site. I made a backup. The problem is not having any new ability since the year 2015 to re-format the XML into a usable document that can be uploaded somewhere else.

But that is my problem.

In the mean time, my email (at least for now) continues to remain bryan@horrorreport.com .. Yes the site is on Facebook and Twitter. But the old fashioned 20th century boy in me still likes emails the best.

The graduate

A new phase of life begins..

My son graduated from pre school last night. My wife and I could not have been more proud of him. Little Ayden, once a nervous little man enrolled in day care and now a child poised and ready to read and write. His eye swelled up with pride during the event. He was on stage with friends. At a few points during the ceremony, in his cap and gown, he peered down at his parents. His bright eyes alive with joy an innocence. He looked like he understood his place in the world and even had an inking as to how the near future was a going to work. When he looked at me and Tara, as our eyes locked, we had the feeling that his youthful energy was burning right through our own souls. Words were not spoken but somehow a message was sent and received. It was an amazing moment.

Just as it seems Ayden now has a bit more of a clue as to how life will work, I think we as parent have less. The cycles of life--childhood and teenage years, the 20s and now the 30 somethings--all come with benefits and tragedies. Each passing moment is just one page in a chapter. Each chapter is a section of book. We don't know the ending and often forget the beginning. There are times we are reading that book of life and just, page by page, stop paying attention to what we are even seeing. When the book comes time to end, we forget everything that happened because we were too busy on peripheral devices or dividing time between sets of activities that never mattered to begin with.

And that is why last night was momentous for me. Without getting involved too heavily with the tears and details, it was a moving ceremony. I cried at how time passed but had tears of joy when I saw Ayden running and playing with friends. Creating memories. Writing his book.

When you are young, you play and pay attention to the book you're in. Every page matters. As we grow, others tell us that our books are not worth anything. Their pages matter more, we start to believe. We often forget the vibrancy we had in youth. By adulthood, acting like a child (in the good ways) is frowned on. We start to take ourselves very, very seriously. To our own demise.

Be young.

Think young

Stop ACTING your age an start being you.

And enjoy each moment. Each page. Each chapter. Your book will one day and someone will review it. Don't be a bad read.

Act like a child. Like Ayden and is friends. Get a fire in your eye and passion--really, not work related either--and burn the world with the fire of life.

The research, published in the journal Astrobiology last week, suggests that more planets in the Milky Way galaxy may harbor advanced civilizations than we previously imagined.
Study co-authors Adam Frank and Woodruff Sullivan looked at recent discoveries of potentially habitable exoplanets and considered the odds of whether sophisticated civilizations existed on them in the past or present.
“What we showed was the ‘floor’ on the probability for a civilization to form on any randomly chosen planet,” Frank, a University of Rochester physics and astronomy professor, told The Huffington Post in an email. “If we are the only civilization in cosmic history, then that what we calculated is the actual probability nature has set. But if the actual probability is higher than that floor, then civilizations have happened before.”

According to the theory, the amount of life on planets beyond ours is potentially staggering.

“Even if you are pretty pessimistic and think that you’d have to search through 100 billion (habitable zone) planets before you found one where a civilization developed, then there have still been a trillion civilizations over cosmic history!” Frank wrote. “When I think about that, my mind reels — even if there is just a one in a 100 billion chance of evolution creating exo-civilizations, the universe still has made so many of them that we are swamped by histories other than our own.”

So there you have your “feeling small on Sunday morning” post.. The notion that we are just existent in a universe abundant in other civilizations like this. Or maybe hopefully NOT like us at all..

But while I laughed when I was younger at my dad’s tall tales, I realized he wasn’t kidding in what he said and quite possibly was correct in some creepy and deeply paranormal way..

Have you ever been in the woods, alone, but felt like every tree was either greeting you with open branches or dismissing you with fluttering leaves? Have you even felt like a tree, in all its might, may just be able to see and discern your intentions?
And maybe trees have to sleep too..

The crowd at Bellgab is polarized as usual ... some say Wade could not compete with George Noory interviewing Dan Rather on Coast to Coast Am. How exactly did Nores get Rather? It's a schtrange world indeed..

IF you didn’t see Candace Payne, a Dallas mother of two, laugh hysterically while wearing a Chewbacca mask, you should. It should almost be mandatory on a gloomy day.

She wasn’t anyone famous.. but literally minutes after posting herself in a car wearing a brand new Chewy mask, her Facebook exploded. It completely shattered the Facebook live video stats.

The views were in the millions.. Even KOHL’s send toys for the entire family (Good marketing Kohls) ..

She captioned the video ‘the simple joys.’ And her video makes you just…happy!

The comments I have seen on the videos have been kind and fun. No one degenerating it into some needless debate. Nothing talking politics.. no one laughing or bullying her..

No, instead, it would seem that her Chewbacca mask is exactly what America needs right now. Something to bridge the numerous gaps that divide us on so many levels.

Egypt air flight 804 vanishes from radar

This is a hard developing story..

Known so far:

The flight left Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport at 11:09 p.m. local time and was supposed to land in Cairo at 3.15 a.m. Thursday. Both the departure and arrival cities are in the same time zone.

-- It vanished 10 miles into Egyptian airspace, the airline said.

--The plane's captain had 6,000 flying hours while the first officer had 4,000, Adel said.

--The Egyptian navy is conducting search and rescue operations in the area it vanished, CNN's Ian Lee said from Cairo. Armed forces are searching the area 40 miles north of Egyptian coastline.

-- There was no special cargo on the flight and no notification of any dangerous goods aboard, Adel said.

-- The plane entered EgyptAir's service on November 3, 2003, he added.

In a keynote address at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, Cardinal Sarah said that in the United States, "God is being eroded, eclipsed, liquidated," Catholic News Agency reports.

Cardinal Sarah pointed out specific events "in the name of 'tolerance'" that have contributed to this erosion, including "the legalization of same sex marriage, the obligation to accept contraception within health care programs, and even 'bathroom bills' that allow men to use the women’s restrooms and locker rooms."

A threat so serious that even Trump can't save us?

There is “LIFE AFTER DEATH” according to a study..

That’s an actual headline from the UK EXPRESS.. and while it seems hopeful and amazing, the information was certainly not conclusive. There is a certain chance that we can live up to three minutes after the heart stops.. there is also the chance that many people have experienced ‘life after death’ type out of body experiences.. or as the UK EXPRESS titled them, ‘outer body.’ There is also a chance that Raymond Moody had it best–and first–with his life after life scenarios and circumstances.

What we know is that we still don’t know..
One of the biggest focuses of this website–and me personally–is to get to the bottom of this question. It may be the most important question we ever ask on this planet. And if we would so happen to find an answer.. my God, imagine how amazing that could really, really be?

I get a sense we will not find that conclusion we are looking for, however.. instead just strange stories, hints, and allegations from the world at large.

We will get the conclusive answer when we meet our fate.
And we hope and strive for a long and healthy question session before we finally get the final answer..

But I am always reminded when I talk about this subject of a comment from John Leer on Art Bell so many years ago: Do NOT go into the light. It's a trap.

Rainbow over nostalgia street

Yesterday, May 15 2016, was a peculiar day of weather in Northeastern Pennsylvania.Cold, rain.. heavy rain.. sun.. SLEET, SNOW! And hail. All of that in the span of about 12 hours.

I said snow. Strange for May. Of course in the 1800s we had a season with no summer, hope that won’t happen in ’16 but it sure felt it yesterday.

But one image I wanted to share. In the aftermath of the rain and snow and storm clouds, rainbows were popping up everywhere. Some dramatic photos showed up on my news feed on Facebook and Instagram. I stole one photo from my sister in law that shows a beautiful rainbow. The picture is unfiltered, nothing added … and the rainbow appears to be directly where St. Mauritius Church stood until only a few months back.

You may recall that I wrote about the structure as it was being torn down last year..

And now, a reminder of a building that was once there on a cold day in May.

Retail hell and the murder of malls

So often, it seems that I am posting “end times” stories on this website. End times for schools in my area.. for churches.. for stores.. End times for the fabric of the once strong and proud coal region of Pennsylvania.. End times for so many things.

Believe it or not, I am mostly a positive person with some negative traits. While admiring those who can see the glass half full all of the time, I strive for that. But lately, things in this area could not be more depressed..

This past weekend, after 20 years of existence, another store in my local mall shuddered and fell by the wayside. Black Diamond antiques in the Schuylkill Mall, Frackville PA.. it was a strange little place, filled with coveted items of yesterday, trinkets that had no specific meaning but most likely meant a lot to someone who passed away within the last 100 years, and old relics like typewriters, newspapers, and He-Man toys. As a matter of fact, I was able to mostly recreate my entire stock of He-Man toys that were tossed into the garbage late 20th century. My son Ayden gets the collection now. He was upset this weekend to learn that Black Diamond’s He-Man selection will vanish.

The problem with malls is that it is not 1989 anymore. Music stores? No need.. fast food? Less interest.. Specialty shops? Amazon!

Just as malls killed main street, Walmart killed malls. Walmart is being slowly impaled on the information superhighway, along with the remaining malls that still survive to today. People have no need for brick and mortar when they can click and order. It’s just the way of the world..

Will these same Amazon shoppers miss malls? Maybe not. A friend of mine complicit in the death of retail shopping holds no guilt. He is fine with the choices he made, completely lavishes in the speed of his goods being shipped and can’t wait for the day when drones can do it.

But those jobs!? (minimum wage, of course.. but summer employment for students and year round employment for seniors… all gone.)

I have been long enamored with the fate of malls. I always sensed it would happen. I am sure you did, too. Nothing after all lasts forever.

I have fond memories of teenage years, scavenging the mall for things to do but finding little. These days, teenagers in the mall would actually be a welcome site—back in the 90s they were always kicked out. Now they doors would be left wide open for ANYONE to come in.

I don’t give my own local mall too much longer.

The Schuylkill Mall even ended up on Deadmalls.com in 2006. No updates since that …

About a year and a half ago, I decided to call the mall management and give them some ideas. I actually penned them and typed them up, making a concise list of practical things I think they could do to replenish shoppers or even have new ideas that don’t involve shopping. One idea was to quit playing 80s music—that generation is gone and there’s no getting it back. Other ideas was an commerce center, indoor farm and market, and lots of free rent for a few months to spawn independent restaurants.

However this was before I completely read the graffiti on the bathroom stall like the holy scripture of the shopping mall: things aren’t coming back. Maybe there will be a few places.. but not many. Malls are gone. Main street USA is boarded up and not reopening. Jobs are vanquished. Drugs dominate. Towns that once celebrated sundown now fear it. The dead eyes of night stare at empty store fronts and peer into windows of dilapidated structures.

With all that said, I am positive for the future. Somehow.

But things indeed are changing.

The future will be drone delivered.

Perhaps what I will miss most? The photos of people trampling each other on Black Friday.

There is a boom in calls for exorcisms in Idaho, apparently..
This report from KIVI-TV reporter Roland Beres, an ABC affiliate in the state:

BOISE, Idaho - As Idaho’s population grows, there has been an influx of new construction, new restaurants, and oddly enough, and increased amount calls for exorcisms.

“Many times we get calls because people are having activity in their homes or businesses,“ exorcism expert and founder of Apparitions Paranormal Investigations Jeff Mason explained. "We actually had the entity identify itself as a demon attached to a resident of one exorcism.”

Despite the doubt and sometimes laughable portrayals of exorcisms in Hollywood movies, Pastor Mike Freeman said that the issue is a reality for some people – especially those living in Third World countries.

“You step into the Third World and it’s definitely a ‘We’re not in Kansas’ anymore moment,” Freeman explained.

“To assume our way of viewing reality as the only way is to limit ourselves.“

There is an inundation of talk about exorcisms as of late throughout the world. Creepy stories of demon possession, house possession, and Pope Francis calling on more priests to battle evil.

And now it has moved to Idaho…
